Laboratory 1 - Calculating the Ideal Gas Constant Purpose: To use a sample of butane gas, C 4 H 10, to experimentally determine the value of the universal gas constant, R. The gas will be collected over water, so Dalton’s Law of Partial Pressures will be used to account for the presence of water vapor in the collection flask. Material: Plastic Bowl100 mL Graduated Cylinder Butane LighterBalance WaterBarometer

Laboratory 1 - Calculating the Ideal Gas Constant Procedure 1. Dip the lighter under water, then shake off the excess water, and dry a towel. Obtain the mass of the lighter to the nearest 0.01 gram and record it in your data table. 2. Fill the bowl 2/3 full with water. Allow the water to reach room temperature. 3. Fill the graduated cylinder to the top with water. Use your hand to cover the opening and invert it into the bowl. Remove your hand, keeping the opening of the graduated cylinder under water. If there are air bubbles in the graduated cylinder, repeat this step.

Laboratory 1 - Calculating the Ideal Gas Constant 4. Hold the lighter under the opening of the graduated cylinder and fill it with butane gas. Collect between 95 and 97 mL of butane gas. Do not to allow any bubbles of butane to escape. Do not exceed 97 mL since this may prevent you from making an accurate volume measurement in step Allow the butane to reach room temperature for about five minutes. Meanwhile, find the temperature of the water to the nearest 0.1  C and record it in your data table. Remove the lighter from the water, shake off the water, and with a towel. Obtain the mass the lighter to the nearest 0.01 gram and record it in your data table.

After the five minutes, move the graduated cylinder up and down until the water level inside the cylinder is the same as the water level outside the cylinder. Be careful not to pull the cylinder out of the water! While maintaining equal water levels, read the volume of the butane to the nearest 0.1 mL and record it in your data table. 7. Record the barometric pressure given by your teacher in the data table. Use the table posted on the wall to look up the vapor pressure of water for your water temperature and record in the data table.
