F.Willeke: HERA, 58th PRC Since February 2004: No beam current limitations due to experimental backgrounds: Beam currents raised as planned to Y 2000 level reaching ~60% of original HERA Design Product of initial Beam currents for all 240 Luminosity runs in 2004 I p max = 106mA, I e max = 48 mA n b =180 HERA Beam Currents in 2004

F.Willeke: HERA, 58th PRC Peak Luminosity

F.Willeke: HERA, 58th PRC Understanding of Specific Luminosity Ideal Value Taking into account: Emittance increase -7% Hour glass effect -8% Residual beta beat -3% Synchro-betatron resonances -6% Measured by H1 -24%  Specific luminosity reasonably close to expectations (75%) short comings well understood, measured planned for further improvements

F.Willeke: HERA, 58th PRC Detector Backgrounds additional collimators far upstream of IPs change in masking at ZEUS (critical) additional pump near IP at H1 increased conductance of pumping ports Warm up of sc magnets during scheduled maintenance steady operations with high beam currents recent status at the colliding beam experiments: HERA-II no longer current-limited due to backgrounds (2/2004) (in wind shadow of 2003 shutdown) most effective However: Background problems due to large coasting beam due to RF problem and after a vacuum leak NR

F.Willeke: HERA, 58th PRC Schedule Start-up with Positrons We are here, So far on track

F.Willeke: HERA, 58th PRC Conclusions In 2004, a promising start of the HERA running was accomplished The luminosity improved as planned Accelerator physics issues are well understood and improvements are underway to overcome short comings Longitudinal polarization was delivered routinely Background conditions with full intensity has been good in general Operational efficiency and the availability of accelerator component is still unsatisfactory High intensity operation revealed weakness in the design which has been improved The shut down was very actively used for the ongoing improvement program HERA operations will continue with electrons in 2004/2005 starting-up very soon
