1932 elections gave Democrats the opportunity to recapture the White House for the first time in 12 years. Franklin Delano Roosevelt emerged the victor of the party’s nomination.

 Distant relative of former pres Theodore Roosevelt  Served as assistant secretary of the navy under Woodrow Wilson  Ran unsuccessfully for vice president in 1920.

 Democrat  From a wealthy family from New York  Stricken with polio -- nearly killed him and left him without full use of his legs --Became governor of New York in 1929.

 As governor, he had launched a groundbreaking relief program to aid the state’s many victims of the Great Depression.  By 1932, Roosevelt’s program had provided help to 1 out of every 10 New York families.  -- his record stood out in contrast to Hoover and his insistence in limited government action.

 UNEMPLOYMENT COMMISSION AND A RELIEF ADMINISTRATION  FIRST STATE AGENCIES TO AID THE POOR IN THE DEPRESSION ERA.  AS A PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE HE PROMISED A “NEW DEAL” with similar programs in mind.

 Roosevelt:  Promised relief for poor and PUBLIC WORKS programs – government-funding building projects that would provide jobs.  Also talked about lowering tariffs.

 Attacked Hoover and Republicans for their response to the GD. “the only efforts made by national administrations to cope with the distress of unemployment were to deny its existence.”  Criticized Hoover for spending too much money, and he promised to cut the federal budget.

WHO IS GOING TO WIN??????

 ROOSEVELT received more than 57 percent of the popular vote and swept the electoral vote in all but six states.  Democrats gained 90 seats in the House of Representatives and 13 seats in the Senate to take control of both the houses of Congress.

 Franklin married his distant cousin, Eleanor Roosevelt.  Served as her husband’s “eyes and ears.”  Became a powerful political force -- campaign to stop lynching of African Americans --Changed the role of the First Lady.

 BANKING CRISIS He issued an executive order temporarily closing all of the nation’s banks. *Bank Holiday* Next, Called Congress into emergency session and pushed through the EBA– Emergency Banking Act.

 Gave government officials power to examine each bank, determine its soundness, take steps to correct problems and, if necessary, close it.  To explain this– Roosevelt gave the first of his FIRESIDE CHATS.

 YES!  Within days, banks began to reopen with government assurances that they were on solid footing.  Glass-Steagall Act of 1933 or the Federal Deposit Insurance Coroporation
