DIELECTRIC SYSTEMS Overview INTERNATIONAL SALES MEETING 2009 Stefan Zimmermann Intl. Sales Manager PhenixAsia, Taiwan

OVERVIEW Phenix Technologies manufactures a wide range of Dielectric Test Sets from smallest kVA ratings in portables to highest power ratings in the world. Dielectric Test Sets are the best sold units of Phenix. Dielectric testing is required, following applicable standards of international institutions, for most electro technical apparatuses and in our transmission/ distribution networks. The most typical applications are: Type testing Routine testing Acceptance testing Preventative maintenance

STANDARDS and rule of thumbs in the field Each facility uses its own test procedures and rules, but all facilities are following certain standards Most commonly known applicable standards are IEC, IEEE, ASTM, AS, etc A standard is a recommendation between the standard committee and the end user Dielectric Testing following IEC 4 and IEEE 60060.1 and 60060.2 standards define that the nominal voltage x2 plus 1000V is to be applied for testing. Un x 2 + 1000V

What is the definition of a Dielectric, a non-conducting substance or widely known as an ISOLATOR? The maximum electric field that a dielectric can sustain The voltage which an insulating material can withstand before breakdown occurs, usually expressed as a voltage gradient. The electric voltage gradient at which an insulating material is broken down or "arced through" in volts per millimeter of thickness. The value of a material as an electrical insulator or the resistance to the flow of electric current. What is a Hipot test? We stress the insulation and measure the leakage current in Amperes

DIELECTRIC TESTING is required for following products: Transformers Reactors Coils Cables Cable Joints and Splices Instrument Transformers Power Capacitors Motors Generators Bushings Insulators Switchgears ( Air, Gas, Oil insulated) Lightning Arrestors Circuit Breakers Insulation Materials ( Oil, Paper ) Protective Goods for Live Line Work (Gloves, Hoods, Hoses, Sticks, Blankets, Helmets, Boots, etc) .....................................

What Dielectric Test Sets does PHENIX offer? AC (Alternating Current) and DC (Direct Current) or AC and DC Dielectric Test Systems Rule of thumb is: If application is AC, test with AC. If application is DC, test with DC.

TEST SYSTEMS Following categories apply to our product range: Dielectric Test Systems (winding type transformers) Variable Inductance Resonant Test Systems Variable Frequency Resonant Test Systems Variable Frequency Transformer Test Systems (VTTS, VITTS) Variable Frequency Motor Test Systems (VMTS) Modular or Stackable Test Systems for AC and DC Material Test Systems per ASTM D149 and IEC60243-1 Standard Standard Products (known as Portable Products for field testing) Bench Top Systems / Stand-Up Systems (transportable) AC/ DC Combination Test Systems Custom made AC or DC, AC/DC Test Systems High Performance Instrumentation (PD, Tan-D, RIV)

FAQ for STANDARD PRODUCTS Are they Partial Discharge free? >>Some are…some aren’t > consult with your RSM Can they be transported? >> YES Are longer cables available? REGULATORS FOR AC DIELECTRIC Three electro/mechanical models available: TOVT (Toroidal Variable Transformers) used from 7.5kVA-250kVA CTVT (Column Type Variable Transformers used from 250kVA-2500kVA THVT (THOMA Variable Transformers) used from 500kVA-1.5MVA *separate technical memo’s available upon request.

FEATURES for COLUMN TYPE REGULATORS Column type variable transformer (CTVT): The Phenix column type variable transformer, designed for the purpose of controlling output voltage offers following advantages: Linear design (the contacts only move in a straight line) Carbon roller contacts - Rolling friction is less than sliding friction; therefore contact movement does not contribute to heat build-up and does not accelerate wear. Rollers are spring-loaded to ensure positive contact and to provide flexibility for movement. Nickel-plated copper contact surface on the columns leads to less wear and a longer service life. The commutating windings of the CTVT are nickel plated in order to limit the circulating currents developed when the carbon roller rests in contact with more than one winding for a substantial amount of time. The high melting point of the nickel coupled with its ohmic resistance is the key to the heavy-duty operation of the Phenix CTVT. However, the nickel offers negligible voltage drop across the regulated voltage circuit between the secondary winding and the output roller. Therefore, the nickel plating is much better suited for this application than is silver plating.

FEATURES for COLUMN TYPE REGULATORS (continued) Output voltage free is of distortion and harmonics. The low volts per turn is a design advantage of the CTVT. At 0.7 volts per turn (or less) the output resolution is considerably better than other regulation devices. A big advantage of the low volts per turn is that circulating currents are negligible. Choke coils are incorporated into the CTVT to help maintain phase balance. Unique plus-minus design features zero magnetic displacement which reduces overall mechanical stress Drive system - The CTVT uses a variable speed motor, screw and gear drive system to move the roller contacts along the column surface. This drive system insures that the contacts on each column are always in synchronization. If a column should fail you simply take that column out of service and can still operate at a reduced kVA until repairs are made. True sine wave output signal.
