Risk MAP Risk Mapping, Assessment and Planning FEMA’s nationwide effort to provide updated flood risk information and tools to communities Communities then use this information to enhance local mitigation plans and better protect citizens from flooding –Strengthens ability to make informed decisions about reducing flood risk –Enhances ability to communicate flood risk to residents and business owners

Changes Affect Insurance IF MAPS SHOW…THESE INSURANCE REQUIREMENTS, OPTIONS AND SAVINGS APPLY Change from moderate or low flood risk to high risk Flood insurance may be mandatory. Flood insurance will be federally required for most mortgage holders. Insurance costs may rise to reflect the true (high) risk. Preferred Risk Policy Extension and Grandfathering offer savings. Insurance costs may rise for some to reflect heightened risk. The NFIP offers these cost savings options to help reduce the premium. Change from high flood risk to moderate or low risk Flood insurance is optional, but recommended. The risk has only been reduced, not removed. Flood insurance can still be obtained, at lower rates. More than 20 percent of all flood insurance claims come from areas outside of mapped high-risk areas. Conversion offers savings. If applicable, an existing policy can be converted to a lower-cost Preferred Risk Policy and insured can get a partial refund. No change in risk level No change in insurance rates. Property owners should talk to their insurance agent to learn their specific risk and take steps to protect their property and assets.
