Roll Of Thunder, Hear My Cry By: Mildred D. Taylor

Protagonists Some of the Protagonists in the story are the Logans, Jeremy Simms, and Mr. Jamison. T.J was a victim of himself. He was both a protagonist and an antagonist. He was an antagonist because he left his true friends and when he was in a time of need, they left him at first. T.J was a protagonist because he was struggling to find his true identity, so he was confused. That is a good thing because when you don’t know something, you learn from your mistakes.

Antagonists Some of the antagonists in the story are Mr. Simms, R.W and Melvin, Lillian Jean, the Wallaces, and Mr. Barnett. They were the whites who were unjust to blacks. Everything has a positive side and a negative side to it. They were the negative side.

Foreshadowing One example of foreshadowing is the song at the beginning of chapter 11: Roll of thunder hear my cry Over the water bye and bye Ole man comin’ down the line Whip in hand to beat me down But I ain’t gonna let him Turn me ‘round

Characters Characters Some of the characters are Cassie, T.J, Uncle Hammer, Little Man, and Mr. Morrison. Cassie stands up for her rights, she is responsible, and she is strong (mentally) and she believes in what she says or does. T.J is a bully, a victim of himself, and he always has some kind of news to tell people. Uncle Hammer has a high temper, he is impatient, and he gets very angry when people treat him or his family unjustly. Little Man also stands up for his rights, he doesn’t like anything getting in his way, and likes to be clean. Mr. Morrison is strong (physically), calm, and helpful. Setting and time The time that this story took place was in the 1930s. The story took place in Mississippi. Other places that were mentioned in the story were Louisiana, Strawberry, Vicksburg, the Great Faith Elementary school, the Wallace store, Logan land, Granger land, and the Avery land.

Plot/Climax The climax and the events that make up the plot are: The Logans have been trying so hard to get the land. Papa burnt a quarter of the land just to save T.J. Papa got shot on his leg by the Wallaces. Stacey, Cassie, Christopher-John, and Little Man are turning into young adults because they are learning about the discrimination between blacks and whites.

Problem Some of the problems in the story were: The Logans were fighting for justice. T.J was too wrapped up in his desires, that he didn’t realize he was in great danger.

Solution The solutions were: The Logans stood up for their rights. For example: Little Man stepped all over his book because those books were the ones that the whites didn’t want anymore. Cassie didn’t want her book, either. Papa sacrificed the land for T.J because he didn’t want T.J to get hurt.
