REALISM DESIREE GUFFIN “When I work, I'm just translating the world around me in what seems to be straightforward terms. For my readers, this is sometimes a vision that's not familiar. But I'm not trying to manipulate reality. This is just what I see and hear.” ― Don DeLilloDon DeLillo -Started around the 1860’s to the 1890’s -Defined as the representation of reality -Thought to have no differences between the 19 th century movement naturalism -Mainly focused on the writing of middle class life or a particular topic -Things were changing rapidly in the US people interested in the different cultures. WRITERS J A D E N P A N E T T A Paulo Coelho features Realism in most of his literary works, such as “The Alchemist”, “The witch of Portobello”, and “The Valkyries”. Henry Adams was one of the first authors to use Realism. You can see his use in his works such as “Democracy” and “Esther, 1918”. Mark Twain was one of the first authors to use Realism. He used realism in many of his works. His most famous are “The Innocents Abroad” and “Roughing it”. Don't go around saying the world owes you a living. The world owes you nothing. It was here first. –Mark Twain Campbell, Donna M. "Realism in American Literature, " Literary Movements.
