Purpose of this workshop: –Review of immigration status –What is SEVIS? –What is SEVIS II? –How will SEVIS II affect students? –How will OIP assist?

Non-immigrant Documents Passport Visa I-20, DS-2019 I-94 Card

Status Status is a legal condition, not a physical thing It is dynamic It can be acquired, maintained, changed, and lost Students must be proactive I-20’s, electronic records, visa stamps are indicators of status

Maintaining Status Fulltime enrollment from start date to end date (unless you have been authorized to attend part-time) Request permission before dropping Finish degree by end date Never work without authorization If on OPT, report employment

Maintaining status, cont’d… Report address changes within 10 days of change Keep immigration documents current (passport, I-20); visa may be expired Stay in contact with OIP

What is SEVIS? The Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) is a web-based program to track and monitor U.S. schools and programs, students, exchange visitors and their dependents throughout the duration of their studies and OPT (if applicable) SEVIS was implemented on January 30, 2003

TODAY’S SEVIS: Only accessed by school & government officials I-20s / DS-2019s are a paper version of an electronic SEVIS record Students have multiple SEVIS record numbers (in some cases) I-20s must be signed to demonstrate valid status

TODAY’S SEVIS, cont’d… –Students must report changes of address, major, etc to school officials who update SEVIS
