Watteau By: Daniel Chang, Kaiden Lenners, Carter Karels

Watteau He was a French painter, who was fond of color. He renewed the Baroque style. Watteau invented genre of fetes galantes. These were depictions of bucolic and idyllic charm. The idea of theatricality is still instilled. Some of his most renowned protagonists were from Italian comedy and ballet.

L’Indifferent This painting was an oil on canvas made in 1716, which is now located in Louvre, Paris. The painting depicts a delicate dancer with a hazy background. The dancer is currently moving in a theatrical, colorful way. Watteau uses shading and intuitive perspective to make the painting more powerful.

The Music Lesson Antoine Watteau created a work in which sever contrast is omnipresent. The girls in the middle as well as the heavily texturized background are light while the characters on the outer edges are very dark. In addition emotionalism plays a big role in this work; the young girls faces are portrayed with clear expressions. Pilgrimage to Cythera The foreground of this work seems to be incredibly detailed while the background lacks defining characteristics. The front tree is so enhanced each individual branch is visible while the back tree is hazy color. There are also religious references as evident by the flying babies.
