Lab safety stations Class review

Station 1: Reading directions Suppose you are going to begin a scientific investigation. What should be one of the first things everyone in your group should do? The first thing you should do at the beginning of a lab is read ALL directions.

Station 2: lab area safety Imagine this is your group’s lab area. What is wrong here? In this picture, the lab area is cluttered and supplies are scattered everywhere.

Station 2: Lab area safety 2. What might happen if your lab group had such a cluttered lab area? If my lab group had such a cluttered lab area, there would not be room to work and accidents (like spills) could happen.

Station 2: Lab area Safety 3. Write a lab safety rule for this station. Always keep the lab area clean and orderly.

Lab Station 3: Lab Dress Code What do you think is the proper clothing to wear when we conduct laboratory investigations? To dress properly for lab, you will want to wear close-toed shoes, safety goggles, a lab coat, gloves, jewelry that doesn’t hang, and long hair tied back.

Lab Station 4: Lab dress code Which picture accurately shows proper lab safety in the lab? A B

Lab Station 4: Lab dress code 2. Write a safety rule for this station. Always wear safety goggles when doing a lab

Lab station 5: glassware and sharp object safety What should you do if you break any of the glassware? If glassware breaks, tell the teacher and get a new piece of glassware.

Lab Station 5: glassware and sharp object safety 2. Should you use the flask below? Why or why not? You would not use a cracked flask, because liquid could leak through the cracks, or the container may break completely and cut you.

Lab station 5: glassware and sharp object safety 3. What special precautions should you take if you are using sharp objects like scalpels (knives) from the dissecting kit? Always cut away from yourself and others.

Lab station 6: animal safety If we are conducting an investigation using live animals, how should you treat the animal and why? When working with live animals, you should treat the animal carefully and with kindness because it is a living thing.

Lab station 6: animal safety 2. What should you do when you are finished handling the animal? When you are finished handling the animal, place it carefully back in its cage and wash your hands.

Lab station 7: chemical safety 1. If there is an unknown substance in the lab, should you smell it to see what it is? Why or why not? Smelling a substance to identify it is ok, as long as it’s done safely. Don’t just sniff!

Lab station 7: chemical safety 2. Write a safety rule for this station. Never sniff anything in the lab directly. Instead, waft just a little bit of the smell up to your nose.

Lab station 8: Chemical safety 1. Should you ever taste something in the lab? You should NEVER taste ANYTHING in the lab to identify it. 2. Write a safety rule for this station. Never EVER taste ANYTHING in the lab without specific permission from the teacher

Lab station 9: chemical safety If you spilled a chemical, what should you do? Tell the teacher to get help in cleaning up the spill.

Lab station 10: chemical safety What is the name of this safety equipment? Eye wash station

Lab station 10: chemical safety 2. When would you use it? You would only use the eye wash station to wash dangerous chemicals out of your eyes.

Lab station 11: chemical safety If you did not use all of the substances given to you for an investigation, what would you do with it? I would ask the teacher what to do with extra supplies, then follow her instructions.

Lab station 11: chemical safety 2. How would you dispose of substances used in the lab? I would need to check with my teacher on how to dispose of extra lab supplies. Some substances I could pour down the drain, but others I would need to give to my teacher to get rid of safely.

Lab station 12: fire safety List for me the steps to operate a fire extinguisher. To operate a fire extinguisher, first pull out the pin, then point the hose toward the flame, then squeeze the handle at the top.

Lab station 12: fire safety 2. What 3 words do you remember about fire safety if your clothing were to catch on fire? If your clothes catch on fire, just remember to stop, drop, and roll.
