Act 1 Summary

Iago Roderigo Brabantio

Iago tells Roderigo that he hates Othello. Othello has promoted Cassio to Lt. and made Iago his ensign (kind of like a corporal…a low ranking position…in this case a personal assistant to O.) Iago and Roderigo tell Brabantio (Desdemona’s dad) about her elopement to Othello. Brabantio becomes enraged and gathers an armed band to find O.

Iago warns Othello of Brabantio’s anger O. is confident in his strength and in his love Desi Cassio arrives with orders for O. to meet with the Duke Brabantio and band seize O. and O. says come with me to the Duke. Alone, Roderigo threatens suicide because he is sad about the marriage of O. and Desi Iago convinces Rod. to sell everything and pursue Desi to Cyprus Alone, Iago again says he hates the Moor. He has heard rumors that O. has slept with his wife, and those these are just rumors, he will act as if it is true.
