The name means “SECOND LAW” Moses Abraham 2000 A.D. Creation of world 2000 B.C. 1400 B.C.. 30 A.D. Book 5 DEUTERONOMY The name means “SECOND LAW” THEME: What it means to have a covenant with the LORD DATE: 1406 BC

Moses Deuteronomy records three sermons Moses preached to the nation Israel as they lay camped on the east bank of the Jordan River across from Jericho. Moses was 120 years old at the time Moses warns Israel of the spiritual dangers they will face and he seeks to encourage them in the grace of their LORD.

Purpose of the Book Deuteronomy is a fascinating book that describes God’s people in a time in between. After forty years of wandering in the wilderness, they arrived at the Promised Land but hadn’t entered yet. Deuteronomy mostly consists of the speeches Moses gave to the second generation on the plains of Moab before they entered the Promised Land. The first generation, those who had left Egypt and witnessed God’s mighty acts of salvation, had died—all except Joshua, Caleb, and Moses. The second generation had not witnessed first hand God’s powerful acts against Egypt, nor his awesome glory revealed on Mount Sinai. Moses took a long pause to instruct this new generation about what makes them God’s people and to challenge them to find their identity and purpose in the covenant with God. As the people waited at the edge of the Promised Land, God’s promises were already there to the reaching hand, but they had not yet been fulfilled.

Recap of Israel’s History (ch: 1-4) The command to Leave Horeb (1:1-8) The appointment of leaders (1:9 – 18) 12 Spies on Canaan (1:19 – 25) Rebellion against the Lord (1:26 – 46) Wanderings in the Desert (2:1 – 23) Defeat of Sihon, King of Heshbron (2:24 – 37) Defeat of Og, King of Bashan (3:1-11) Division of the land (3:12 – 20) Moses Forbidden to Cross the Jordan (3:21-29) Obedience Command and Idolatry Forbidden (4:1-31) The Lord is God (4:32 – 40) Cities of Refuge (4:41 – 43)

Moses Speaks These are the words that Moses spoke to all Israel beyond the Jordan in the wilderness…go in and take possession of the land that LORD swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give to them and to their offspring after them. (1:1, 8)

The Wilderness Years Turn northward and command the people, You are about to pass through the territory of your brothers, the people of Esau, who live in Seir; and they will be afraid of you. So be very careful. (2:4)

Mount Seir, Edom and Esau Mount Seir is located in Edom Region southeast of the Salt Sea, now part of Saudia Arabia Edom was settled by Esau the twin brother of Jacob. This land was promised to them by God (Genesis 36:8 – 9)

The Wilderness Years Do not contend with them, for I will not give you any of their land, no, not so much as for the sole of the foot to tread on, because I have given Mt. Seir to Esau as a possession…purchase what you need from them…for the Lord your God has blessed you in the all the work of your hand. He knows your going through this great wilderness. These forty years the LORD God has been with you. You have lacked nothing. (2:5 - 7)

38 Year Journey At the time from our leaving Kadesh-barnea until we corssed the brook Zered was thirty-eight years, until the entire generation, that is, the men of war, had perished from the camp, as the LORD had sworn to them. (2:14)

Moses Forbidden to Enter the Land

Moses Command And now, O Israel, listen to the statues and the rules that I am teaching you, and do them, that you may live, and go in and take possession of the land that the LORD, the God of your fathers, is giving you. You shall not add to the word that I command you, nor take from it, that you may keep the commandments of the LORD your God that I command you. (Deuteronomy 4:1 – 2)

For what great nation is there, that has a God so near to it as the LORD our God is to us, whenever we call upon him? Only take care…don’t forget…and don’t depart from my word…Make them know to you children and your children’s children…
