TruckSTOP Campaign PACT-Ottawa, Ontario (Persons Against the Crime of Trafficking in Humans) MAST - London, Ontario Men Against Sexual Trafficking

What is TruckSTOP ? TruckSTOP is an awareness initiative about human trafficking for frequent travelers and members of the transport industry Campaign materials will provide individuals with signs they can look for to identify suspected cases of human trafficking We are asking individuals to call 911 or Crime Stoppers to report tips if they suspect a case of human trafficking

What is Human Trafficking?  Sex trafficking in which a commercial sex act is induced by force, fraud, or coercion, or in which the person induced to perform such an act has not attained 18 years of age. OR  The recruitment, harboring, transportation, provision, or obtaining of a person for labor or services, through the use of force, fraud or coercion for the purpose of subjection to involuntary servitude, debt bondage, or slavery. IN OTHER WORDS HUMAN TRAFFICKING IS MODERN DAY SLAVERY!!

Human Trafficking Stats  Over 27 million people are enslaved today – that’s more than at any other time in our history. (Not for Sale by David Blackstone)  Craigslist had participated in the selling of children as young as 10 years old under their “Adult Services” section. Due to public outcry the (national) section has now been removed. (Katherine Chon, Polaris Project, 2007)  Human trafficking is a $32 billion industry –second largest criminal activity in the world. (Not for Sale by David Blackstone) THE WORLD’S FASTEST GROWING CRIMINAL ENTERPRISE!!

A Perfect Situation For Traffickers Many Teens are naïve and vulnerable Casual sex/easy money schemes Sexually charged media hype (ads, print, videos and music) The Pimp Culture is glorified Easy access to pornography fuels the demand Homelessness/lack of survival resources and supports Many come from poor family structure/abusive homes Armed with 24 hr. access through technology/social media Sophisticated internet niche marketing Many victims are exploited & controlled by organized crime

Strategies Traffickers Use  Force  Physical assault (beating, burning, slapping, hitting, assault with a weapon)  Sexual assault  Rape  Gang rape  Physical confinement and isolation  Fraud  False employment offers  Lying about work conditions  False promises  Withholding wages  Coercion  Any threats to life, safety, to family members or other similar parties  Threats involving immigration status or arrest  Use of debt to control the victim  Withholding legal documents like passports and visas  Psychological abuses

The Goal of TruckSTOP TRUCKSTOP’s aim is to educate, equip, empower and mobilize members of the trucking industry to combat human trafficking as a regular part of their jobs. Resources will include: *Our Website *Truck Show Booths *Materials for Truckers *TRUCKSTOP CD *Social Media *TAT Training DVD *Partnerships within and outside the Trucking industry

TruckSTOP Objectives Our goal is to put our wallet card, and other materials into the hands of every driver in Canada so that when they see a minor working the truckstop lot or suspect human trafficking is taking place they’ll call 911 or Crime Stoppers at TIPS in Canada or in the U.S. to report what they know.

Many Thanks to TRUCKERS AGAINST TRAFFICKING For This Training Video: View Video Online
