Matthew 11:16-30

11:1-15 John the Baptist 11:20-27 His question: Are you the one? Jesus’ answer: Prophets Evaluation of John’s ministry 11:16-19 Mixed reception of Jesus versus John the Baptist 11:28-30

Matthew 11:16-17 “But to what shall I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the market places, who call out to the other children, 17 and say, ‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not mourn.’”

Matthew 11:18-19 “For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon!’ 19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Behold, a gluttonous man and a drunkard, a friend of tax-gatherers and sinners!’ Yet wisdom is vindicated by her deeds.”

11:1-15 John the Baptist 11:20-27 Woe to those who have not repented His question: Are you the one? Jesus’ answer: Prophets Evaluation of John’s ministry 11:16-19 Mixed reception of Jesus versus John the Baptist 11:28-30

Capernaum Chorazin Bethsaida $ $ $ Then He began to reproach the cities in which most of His miracles were done, because they did not repent. (Matthew 11:20).

Matthew 11:21-22 “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles had occurred in Tyre and Sidon which occurred in you, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. 22 Nevertheless I say to you, it shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in the day of judgment, than for you.”

Matthew 11:23-24 “And you, Capernaum, will not be exalted to heaven, will you? You shall descend to Hades; for if the miracles had occurred in Sodom which occurred in you, it would have remained to this day. 24 Nevertheless I say to you that it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for you.”

11:1-15 John the Baptist 11:20-27 Woe to those who have not repented His question: Are you the one? Jesus’ answer: Prophets Evaluation of John’s ministry 11:16-19 Mixed reception of Jesus versus John the Baptist 11:28-30 Thanks to Father for those who have

Matthew 11:25-26 At that time Jesus answered and said, “I praise Thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that Thou didst hide these things from the wise and intelligent and didst reveal them to babes. 26 Yes, Father, for thus it was well-pleasing in Thy sight.”

Matthew 11:27 “All things have been handed over to Me by My Father; and no one knows the Son, except the Father; nor does anyone know the Father, except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son wills to reveal Him.”

11:1-15 John the Baptist 11:20-27 Woe to those who have not repented His question: Are you the one? Jesus’ answer: Prophets Evaluation of John’s ministry 11:16-19 Mixed reception of Jesus versus John the Baptist 11:28-30 Invitation to the weary and heavy- laden to come and find rest Thanks to Father for those who have

Matthew 11:28-30 Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy- laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take My yoke upon you, and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you shall find rest for your souls. 30 For My yoke is easy, and My load is light.”

Because you did not serve the LORD your God with joy and a glad heart, for the abundance of all things; 48 therefore you shall serve your enemies whom the LORD will send against you, in hunger, in thirst, in nakedness, and in the lack of all things; and He will put an iron yoke on your neck until He has destroyed you. (Deuteronomy 28:47-48).

Hard work was created for everyone, and a heavy yoke is laid on the children of Adam, from the day they come forth from their mother's womb until the day they return to the mother of all the living. (Sirach 40:1).

Many have fallen by the edge of the sword, but not as many as have fallen because of the tongue. 19 Happy is the one who is protected from it, who has not been exposed to its anger, who has not borne its yoke, and has not been bound with its fetters. 20 For its yoke is a yoke of iron, and its fetters are fetters of bronze (Sirach 28:18-20).

Discipline your son and make his yoke heavy, so that you may not be offended by his shamelessness. (Sirach 30:13).

I opened my mouth and said, “Acquire wisdom for yourselves without money. 26 Put your neck under her yoke, and let your souls receive instruction; it is to be found close by.” (Sirach 51:25-26).
