Patriot and Loyalist Vocabulary Mini-Lesson

Common Core Standard Addressed CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.5.4 Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text* CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.5.4 *This lesson will include a non-text resource as well.

Lesson Element # 2 Learning Target(s): The students will be able to recognize the terms patriot and loyalist in regards to the American Revolution The students will use their understanding of the terms patriot and loyalist to compare and contrast the two The students will be able to apply the terms patriot and loyalist in their continued study of the American Revolution

Student-Friendly Translation I can identify the terms patriot and loyalist I can compare and contrast the terms patriot and loyalist I can use the terms patriot and loyalist in meaningful ways

Lesson Element #3 Relevance/Rationale: The strategies used in this lesson offer students multiple venues for obtaining knowledge about unknown vocabulary they may encounter in life.

Student-Friendly Translation In this lesson I will learn ways of exploring and understanding vocabulary.

Lesson Element #4 Formative Assessment Criteria for Success: Successful completion of the tasks will result in a Wallwisher Wall defining and discussing the terms In future work with these terms, students accurately utilizing them in dialogue and/or writing (whether centered around the American Revolution or not)

Student-Friendly Translation I will know I have been successful when I have contributed to the Wallwisher Walls and I am able to use the words Patriot and Loyalist outside of this assignment.

Lesson Element # 5 Activities/Tasks To begin, students will be introduced to the key words for the lesson: Patriot and Loyalist “Before we begin our study of the American Revolution, it is important that we have a good understanding of some vocabulary associated with it. Today you will be working with the words “Patriot” and “Loyalist”. Next, let the students know what the outcome of the lesson will be “After using a few resources to learn a bit about these terms, you will be responsible for posting to a wall on wallwisher any pictures, questions, definitions, connections, etc that you have about the terms. One wall will be devoted to “Patriot” while the other will be solely for “Loyalist”. The more you include the better understanding we all will have about this vocabulary. If needed, you may post to either wall during your exploration of the resources as your knowledge grows!” Assign students 2 of the 4 Exploration Resources to use in their discovery of the vocabulary terms. Give them the links to these as well as the Wallwisher Walls and allow for approximately minutes for completion. “Sarah you will use resources # 1 & 2, Walter you will use resources #2 & 3...etc” At the end of the lesson, review the walls created. Any questions left unanswered could be discussed or students may be directed to use the resources they were not assigned to gain clarity.

Lesson Element #6 Resources/Materials: Exploration Resources Resource # 1 Resource #2 Resource #3 Resource # 4 Wallwisher Walls:

Lesson Element #7 Access for All: Classrooms that lack access to computers may use a printed version of the resources and may respond to the “Wallwisher Walls” as a bulletin board/poster -type assignments.

Lesson Element # 8 Modifications/Accommodations: The resources are varied in length and modality. There is an article, a video, a slideshow, and a question/answer text. Accommodations can be made by preselecting resources for different types of learners, printing off the text/making the text larger, or even allowing students to work in pairs.
