Learning Objective : Compare and contrast tales from different cultures.

What are we comparing and contrasting ? Tales from different cultures.

Compare and contrast the information with your partner. What is Ice Cream? Ice cream or ice-cream is a frozen dessert usually made from dairy products, such as milk and cream, and often combined with fruits or other ingredients and flavors. Most varieties contain sugar, although some are made with other sweeteners. In some cases, artificial flavorings and colorings are used in addition to (or in replacement of) the natural ingredients. This mixture is stirred slowly while cooling to prevent large ice crystals from forming; the result is a smoothly textured ice cream. Ice Cream Recipe What you'll need: 1 tablespoon sugar 1/2 cup milk or half & half 1/4 teaspoon vanilla 6 tablespoons rock salt 1 pint-size plastic food storage bag (e.g., Ziploc) 1 gallon-size plastic food storage bag Ice cubes How to make it: Fill the large bag half full of ice, and add the rock salt. Seal the bag. Put milk, vanilla, and sugar into the small bag, and seal it. Place the small bag inside the large one, and seal it again carefully. Shake until the mixture is ice cream, which takes about 5 minutes. Wipe off the top of the small bag, then open it carefully. Enjoy!

The Importance of Comparing and Contrasting Tales from different cultures Good readers use a variety of strategies and skills to help them comprehend and make connections.

Comparing and Contrasting tales from different cultures What does it mean to compare? Identifying how two things are alike. What does it mean to contrast? Identifying how two things are different. What is a culture? A group of people who have the same traditions

1.Preview questions 2.Read the passage and identify the common traits and different characteristics (think about the lessons both stories are trying to teach and main characters of both stories) 3.Read questions and find answer in text that answer questions In both stories characters learn that A.That its better to be a fox B.Having too much cleverness can lead to trouble C.You should not steal D. having a lot of wit will keep you out of trouble The hedgehog is different from the cat because a.He used his wit to trick the fox b.He saved the fox’s life c.He climbed the tree d.He chose not to use his wit Push to read stories Next example

The Fox and the Cat Aesop A fox was boasting to a cat of its clever devices for escaping its enemies. "I have a whole bag of tricks," he said, "which contains a hundred ways of escaping my enemies." "I have only one," said the cat. "But I can generally manage with that." Just at that moment they heard the cry of a pack of hounds coming towards them, and the cat immediately scampered up a tree and hid herself in the boughs. "This is my plan," said the cat. "What are you going to do?" The fox thought first of one way, then of another, and while he was debating, the hounds came nearer and nearer, and at last the fox in his confusion was caught up by the hounds and soon killed by the huntsmen. Miss Puss, who had been looking on, said, "Better one safe way than a hundred on which you cannot reckon." The Fox and the Hedgehog South Slavonic A fox meeting a hedgehog asked him, "How many wits have you?" And he replied, "Only three. But how many have you?" "I," boasted the fox," have seventy-seven." As they were talking and walking along, not noticing where they were going, they fell into a deep hole which the peasants had dug. The fox asked the hedgehog to save him. The hedgehog said, "I have only three wits. Perhaps you will save me first, then I will see about you afterwards," and he asked the fox to pitch him out of the hole. The fox did so, and then asked the hedgehog whether he could help him. The hedgehog said, "I cannot help you with three, if you cannot help yourself with seventy-seven." And so the fox was caught in the morning by the peasants and killed.

Compare and Contrast passages In both stories, the main character learns A to ask for help when he needs it. B that magic cannot solve problems. C to be careful about the people he trusts. D that it is important to have one best friend. In what way are Grady and Antonio different? A Grady wears fancy clothes, but Antonio dresses in shabby rags. B Grady has a wife and family, but Antonio is a young man starting out on his own. C Grady is very funny and likes to tell jokes, and Antonio is a very serious person. D Grady is shy and likes to live on a farm, and Antonio is a friendly town man Read Both “Tip of the ole Hat” and “The Lucky Cloak” 1.Preview questions 2.Read the passage and identify the common traits and different characteristics (think about the lessons both stories are trying to teach and main characters of both stories) 3.Read questions and find answer in text that answer questions

Closing What did we learn today? Why is it important? When we compare and contrast tales what are some elements we should consider?
