In 2003, on its first space trip, the Hubble space telescope ushered in an explosion within Man’s consciousness of an otherwise unseen universe. For the first time, Man viewed the limitless cosmos, galaxies in utter detail, supernovas exploding, their remnants expanding in slow motion for the last million years, gas-cloud clusters and scattered star dusts in fantastic surrealism, nebulas twisting, galaxies colliding, blackholes eating large stars, violence and serenity all around. The first thought that comes to us is the greatness of our Creator. Seeing hundreds of ‘tiny’ galaxies in a single photo frame, we realize the vastness of the universe, and we suddenly realize our utter smallness. Our awe is followed by humility. We sit in silent wonder, meditating on Who has done all this, Who holds infinity in the palm of His hand.
One galaxy is made up of billions of stars. The thing that holds the stars together is a super- blackhole at its very center, where a teaspoon of matter has the mass of thousands of our suns, where light cannot escape the extreme gravitational pull, where the darkness hides the blinding light. There are billions of these galaxies controlling quadrillions of stars across the universe measuring about eight billion light years in diameter. If our solar system, which we have not traversed, is the size of the head of the pin, then the universe would be the size of our solar system. The photos are courtesy of NASA and the Hubble Heritage Team which have made the mosaic of hundreds of pictures available to all of us through the Internet.
