AKS Geoscience

Located in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, AKS Geoscience Inc. is a progressive independent firm comprised of professional geophysicists and engineers (APEGGA members). We provide geophysical expertise on complex environmental and engineering problems. Drawing on 20 years of domestic and international project experience we bring a unique perspective to many of the issues facing the environmental and engineering communities. We provide geographical asset management data to assist our clients in documenting the characteristics of their property such as those related to site assessment, contamination mapping, industrial development, urban planning, and pipeline rupture. AKS believes in working with the youth of today and has participated in a number of business/education initiatives such as Southern Alberta Institute of Technology's GIS mentorship program.

AKS Geoscience Geophysical Surveys Electromagnetics Electrical Resistivity Tomography Ground Penetrating RADAR Wireline Logging Direct Path Conductivity Magnetics Satellite Imaging Orthoimages Digital Elevation Models Land Cover Classification

AKS Geoscience An example of an EM31 survey conducted at an upstream oil/gas facility is presented in plan view below. Red coloured areas indicate the lateral extent of contamination related to a buried flare pit at the site. Electromagnetic (EM) instruments are commonly used during environmental investigations to measure ground conductivity. Inorganic contaminants introduced into the shallow subsurface dramatically effect ground conductivity, thus EM surveys are an excellent tool for mapping the lateral extent of inorganic impacts related to anthropogenic (human) activities. EM Instruments

AKS Geoscience A magnetometer measures the intensity of the earth’s total magnetic field in nanotesla (nT). In environmental applications, ferro-magnetic materials which are present in the shallow subsurface will create significant anomalies in the total magnetic field. Thus, the presence of buried metal objects can be easily mapped with magnetometer surveys. The vertical gradient of the magnetic field is a secondary measurement that is collected concurrently alongside the total magnetic field. Vertical magnetic gradient data is independent of diurnal drift (eg., natural variations in the earth’s magnetic field) thus is often a more reliable indicator of the presence of buried metallic objects. Examples of Magnetometer Data

AKS Geoscience EM31 data showing areal extent of landfill cells. Electrical Resisitvity Tomography can add a valuable depth component to our electromagnetic surveys. From the combination of these two datasets a volume of impact may be determined. For example, the ERT data shown below indicates the vertical extent of landfill cells in a cross-sectional format.

Scope of Work –to create a web-based geoportal which will allow users to interactively view enhanced satellite images. Thus, the functionality of sophisticated remote sensing software will be brought to the general user. Example applications are quantifying land surface attribute changes over time from mining reclamation efforts, oil spill clean-up, forest cover, or some other derivative of the multispectral components. Summary of major tasks AKS Geoscience
