6 th Grade CORE Lesson March 25, 2015

Standard: AZ-6.NS.B.3 Fluently add, subtract, multiply, and divide multi-digit decimals using the standard algorithm for each operation.

Remember…

The Basic Steps: Make sure the divisor is a whole number, if it isn’t move decimal point to right to make it a whole number. If you moved the decimal point in the divisor, move decimal point in dividend the same number of places. (Whatever you do to one side, do to the other!) Put decimal point directly above decimal point in the dividend. Estimate Divide as usual.... Check your answer.

Why Estimate? Before dividing your numbers, use one of the estimating strategies you learned to see what the answer should be close to. When you divide, you can see if your answer is reasonable.

Example… To move or not to move? Yes, move

Let’s do this together now divided by move decimal to the end to make this a whole number Whatever you do to The divisor, you do to The dividend. Move the decimal up, then divide

Let’s do this together now divided by

Special Note If a number does not show a decimal, the decimal is AT THE END! Example: there is an invisible decimal right here

Let’s do this together now 234 divided by In order to move the decimal in the dividend, we first had to add the decimal to the end of 234, then we could move it

Let’s do this together now divided by 1. 2

Working individually, complete the practice problems. The class with the highest average of correct problem sets will win 50 HUSKY POINTS!!!
