The Authority and Mercy of Jesus

Mark 5:35-41 On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side.” And leaving the crowd, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. And other boats were with him. And a great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling.

Mark 5:35-41 But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. And they woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.

Mark 5:35-41 He said to them, “Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?” And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”

The Significance of Jesus Calming the Storm Only Creator God has the authority to command the wind and the waves. Jesus was revealing His authority over the natural world.

The Response of the Disciples to Jesus’ Authority “And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, ‘Who then is this…’”

Jesus never lacked the authority to command the storms to cease.

Mark 5:1-13 Jesus delivers the man possessed by a legion of demons.

The Significance of Jesus Delivering the Demon-Possessed Man All of society can do nothing about spiritual problems. Jesus was revealing His authority over the spiritual realm.

The Response of the People to This Miracle And they came to Jesus and saw the demon-possessed man, the one who had had the legion, sitting there, clothed and in his right mind, and they were afraid. …And they began to beg Jesus to depart from their region. -Mark 5:15,17

Jesus Sends the Man on Mission “Go home to your friends and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.”

Mark 5:21-24,35-43 The synagogue ruler, Jairus, implores Jesus to help his dying daughter.

Mark 5:25-34 Jesus heals the woman with the issue of bleeding.

“Daughter, your faith has made you well.” Faith: Faith is believing and placing your trust in who God is and what God has said, resulting in a change in us as we respond to His authority.

The Reaction of the Woman “But the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came in fear and trembling and fell down before him…”

The Significance of this Miracle Jesus demonstrates His authority to heal and to save those who come to Him in faith.

Jesus Raises Jairus’ Daughter from the Dead “Your daughter is dead.” “Your daughter is dead.” Jesus said, “Do not fear; only believe.” Jesus said, “Do not fear; only believe.” “The child is not dead, but sleeping.” “The child is not dead, but sleeping.” “Little girl, I say to you, arise. ” “Little girl, I say to you, arise. ” The girl immediately got up and began walking. The girl immediately got up and began walking.

The Reaction of the People to This Miracle “…they were immediately overcome with amazement.”

The Significance of Jesus Raising Jairus’ Daughter from the Dead Jesus demonstrates His authority over life and death.

The Supreme Authority of Jesus Authority over the natural world. Authority over the natural world. Authority over the spiritual realm. Authority over the spiritual realm. Authority to save those who come to Him in faith. Authority to save those who come to Him in faith. Authority over life, and the last great enemy: death itself. Authority over life, and the last great enemy: death itself.
