Maintaining Smoke Alarms

What we will learn today We will talk about how important it is to maintain your smoke alarms in good working order - and that YOU can learn to test your smoke alarms and change the batteries.

We have already learned that: Preventing fire is the most important thing - but if a fire does happen in your home, you need to be able to get out immediately, and make sure your whole family knows how to get out. Fire is very hot, very dark, and moves very fast - so every second counts.

It takes three things to cause a fire: Heat - or something that is hot Fuel - or something that will burn Oxygen - or the air all around us

When these three things come in contact with each other - a fire can occur

Having working smoke alarms in your home can double your chances of surviving a fire. Beep

Where should your smoke alarms be placed in your home?

Living Room Bedroom Dining Room Kitchen

You should test your smoke alarms every month

Test your smoke alarms by pushing the test button. If the alarm does not beep - replace the battery immediately.

If you cannot reach your smoke alarm - use a broom handle to push the button.

Smoke alarm batteries should be changed twice every year - once in the spring and once in the fall. Even if they are not old. Spring Forward - Fall Back –When you change your clocks - change your smoke alarm batteries If you smoke alarm begins to beep periodically, and there is no smoke present - change the battery immediately

Clean your smoke alarms often –Dust them with a feather duster or use the attachment on your vacuum to remove the dust.
