Using Language to Persuade... What’s the deal? Area of Study Three – Unit 3

What did we learn at English seminar? Mascara example…. Positioning the reader…to think/feel/believe/do… The placing of a word – power of language. Intentional choices used to persuade… Range of intepretations…

What will you be marked on? Your ability to discuss, explore and explain how effectively language is being used to influence the reader to think/feel/believe/do…. Two parts to Area of Study Three – Using Language to Persuade 1. Article analysis (20 marks) 2. Oral presentation (20 marks)

Part 1: article analysis Context – controversy, audience, form, date of publication, source, write, tonalities used, contention. Four sentences max. Contention – desired outcome – what is the writer’s argument? Construction – features, persuasive devices, tone, voice. Identify persuasive devices (10%) ANALYSE (not describe) the ways in which the LANGUAGE positions the reader to feel/think/believe/do…(90%) Use WHW – What, How, Why when analysing IMPACT of language. Coherent, substantiated, perceptive and sophisticated analysis of language – NOT A LISTING OF TECHNIQUES. Need to analyse the WHOLE piece – development of PERSUASION. Tone – SHIFTS throughout the piece… WHAT? HOW? WHY? 20 marks

Language – HOW AND WHY! The language - implies, suggests, insinuates, represents, depicts, portrays, illustrates, vilified, demonize, denigrates, You will be given word banks to use to ANALYSE THE IMPACT OF LANGUAGE. LEARN THEM AND PRACTICE USING THEM!

Part 2: oral presentation Present your point of view on any issue that has appeared in the Australian media since September Importance of verbal and non verbal communication – eye contact, gestures, use of persuasive devices to engage the reader. Oral presentation reflects on the COMPLEXITY of the debate and presents a COHERENT (flowing), SUBSTANTIATED (back up what you are saying! and LOGICAL argument. 20 marks
