C&G 7303 – Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector Identifying Student Needs

Identifying student needs

Initial assessment We carry out initial assessment firstly to ensure that learners are on the right programme. In addition, if we design and manage the process well, we can use it to gather information to support the whole of the learners' experience. http://excellence.qia.org.uk/page.aspx?o=108381

Think …… SPICE…. when considering learner needs SOCIAL Think …… SPICE…. when considering learner needs PHYSICAL INTELLECTUAL CULTURAL EMOTIONAL

Activity task Research ‘initial assessment’ and identify a range of methods Write down an initial assessment method you would use in your specialist area of teaching Why?

Learning styles Learning styles are different approaches or ways of learning Learners could be: ………………………

Visual Learn through seeing

Auditory Learn through hearing

Kinaesthetic Learn through doing

Activity task Research ‘learning styles’ and identify 3 teaching methods you would plan for each of the following: Visual learners Auditory learners Kinaesthetic learners

Individual Learning Plans (ILPs) Completed by teachers and learners at the start of a learning programme ILPs should record: What the learner already knows What the learner can achieve on the course or what the learner would like to achieve Progress on the course Final achievement
