ANALOG STUDIO SETUP II Patchbay Wiring - Console I/O

Audio from mics and instruments go into the channel strip’s mic inputs Using the subgroups or DO’s, the console sends the mic/line inputs to the multi-track Recorded tracks return to the console for monitoring and mixing The final mix (main L/R) is sent to the two-track and recorded. Returns from the two-track connect to center section inputs. Center Section outputs connect to control room monitors (amps) and cue system.

The I/O’s of a Channel Strip  Direct Out/Tape Send - This channel strip output occurs after the EQ, and insert point. The output is either the channel fader output or the output of a bus (bus 4 shown), depending on the direct/group out switch. These are used to connect MTRs with more tracks (for example a 24 track) than available bus outputs (i.e. an 8 bus console)  Tape Return - This is used to monitor the MTR on the monitor (Mix B) inputs while tracking.  Insert - This unbalanced point sends and returns audio on one TRS jack. Typically used to insert outboard (dynamics or EQ) processing.  Line in/ Mic in - These inputs are the signals that will occupy the channel path. These cannot be used at the same time, and are selected by the Mic/Line switch at the top of the channel strip.

Recording Console’s Center Section I/O

 Mix/ Mix B Outputs - Feeds the main mix buss outputs to two- track recorder inputs.  CRM/ALT O/P - This output feeds the CR source to the main or alternate set of control room monitor amplifiers.  2TK A/B Inputs - Connects the line level outputs of 2 sets of 2- track recorders to the CR source select switch.  Group/Mix Insert - This unbalanced point sends and returns audio on one TRS jack. Used to insert processing across an individual bus or a mix bus.  STU O/P - Used to send the studio foldback source to studio monitor amplifiers (i.e. a PA system in the studio).

Recording Console’s Center Section I/O  STU PHNS B – Sends the signal selected in the Studio B Phones Output to the cue system amplifiers.  FX Inputs – Used to connect outputs from additional 2 track sources or time-based effects units. These signals show up on the stereo FX input pots in the center section.  Aux Outputs - Used to create parallel sends to time based effects, etc. Often time these normal to time based FX inputs on the patchbay.  Bus Outputs - These are additional individual bus outputs. The individual bus outs are also present on the channel strip outputs when the group/direct switch is set to group.
