How is the Thirteenth Sabbath Offering going to be used? This quarter’s Thirteenth Sabbath Offering will help:  Place rebroadcast radio stations in communities across Canada  Expand the reach and effectiveness of Life Talk Radio across the United States

The division is made up of two of the world’s largest countries—the United States and Canada—and the island nation of Bermuda.

The Seventh-day Adventist Church was born, and its growth was nurtured, in North America in the mid- to late-1800’s. The denomination chose its name in 1860 and officially organized in Ellen and James White

The first Adventist missionary to be sent to a country outside of North America was J. N. Andrews who left for Switzerland in 1874.

In the years following 1874, believers in North America sacrificed to send missionaries to Europe, Asia, India, Africa, and Australia. Today roughly 1000 Inter-Division employees and almost 29,000 short- term missionaries are serving from North America.

This Thirteenth Sabbath you have an opportunity to help share the gospel with people who are searching for hope. This quarter and throughout the year please prayerfully consider giving 2 percent of your income to world mission. There will never be a better time to use your income to spread the good news of God’s grace.

Time for the Mission Story We are taking the good news to the entire world. Read the Mission Story on pages 18 and 19 of the Third Quarter Adventist Mission Youth and Adult Magazine while slowly progressing through the next 3 slides.

“Tell me about the day of Jesus’ resurrection,” Luke said. “That’s a day I’ll never forget,” Cleopas answered, shaking his head.

“We were in the upper room. Hiding out. We didn’t know if the priests would arrest us because we were His followers.”

“With Passover finished, we had to return home. Before leaving Jerusalem, we met with some of the other believers.”

“They had heard that Jesus’ body wasn’t in the tomb. And several of the women had claimed they had seen Him.”

“What did you think about that?” asked Luke. “I didn’t know what to think,” Cleopas said. “We were too weary to sort out the rumors. It was late, and we just wanted to get home.”

“How far did you live from Jerusalem?” Luke asked. “Seven miles—but that day it seemed like we were shuffling to the ends of the earth. There were quite a few others on the road.”

“We were too depressed to greet them as we walked along. We kept to ourselves.”

“We just couldn’t understand what had happened. We tried to encourage each other, but neither of us did a very good job.”

“We hadn’t been walking for very long when a man caught up to us,” Cleopas continued. “Neither one of us paid much attention to him.”

“I guess we were too wrapped up in our own misery. If we seemed rude, he never let us know, but he wanted to know what we were so upset about.”

“We asked him if he was a stranger around here. I was surprised that he didn’t seem to know about what had happened in Jerusalem.”

“Practically the entire city had spoken of nothing else since Friday. He just let us talk about what was bothering us.”

“Do you remember what you told him?” asked Luke. “I said I wasn’t sure why Jesus died,” Cleopas recalled.

“And I had believed that Jesus was a prophet sent by God to deliver Israel. I surprised myself by telling this stranger so much, but he seemed like someone I could trust.”

“Yes, and that we didn’t know what to believe. If He was alive, where was He? But it seemed impossible. The stranger could tell we felt bad.” “Did you tell him what the women had said?” asked Luke.

“But then he told us that there wasn’t really any reason for us to feel that way.”

“He talked about how the Messiah had to suffer so we could see His real glory. He also reminded us about what the prophets had said about the Messiah.”

“It was strange. This man sounded so much like Jesus, I remember I kept looking at him and wondering who he was.”

“When we finally arrived at our house, the stranger kept walking as if he were going to continue on his trip. I stopped him and invited him to come in and stay with us.”

“Since it was late I just gathered a few things for our meal. The stranger had taken my place at the head of the table.”

“I thought that was strange, but I didn’t say anything. Instead I passed the bread to him for the blessing.”

“As he spread out his hands over the loaf, I got goose bumps. He did it exactly like Jesus did!”

“Looking closer, I saw the nail prints in his hands and then I knew why he had sounded like Jesus while we were walking. It was Jesus!”

“What did you do then?” Luke asked. “We knelt down to worship Him, but when we looked up, He had disappeared.”

“We were too excited to sleep. So we decided to go back to Jerusalem and tell the others what we had seen.”

“Even though it was dark, we ran back down the same road we had just traveled. We slipped and slid on the rocky places, but we didn’t care.”

“We’d wander off the path and have to find our way again None of that mattered.”

“Jesus was alive, and we had seen Him! We had to tell everyone!”

“When we got back to Jerusalem, the disciples there had seen Jesus too!”

“And since that day, we have known that He is with us every day.”

THINKING ABOUT THE LESSON

Why do you think Jesus spent time and appeared to people after His resurrection, instead of just going back to heaven?

How many people can you think of that Jesus appeared to after His resurrection?

The disciples who walked with Jesus toward Emmaus expected the Messiah to be a Saviour. What did they expect Jesus to save them from?

On the way to Emmaus Jesus explained to them what they really needed. It is what the angel told Joseph, before Jesus was born (Matthew 1:21).

Luke 24, NIV 25 He said to them, "How foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26 Did not the Christ have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?" 27 And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.

Let’s pray that God will open our eyes to what we really need.
