STUFF WE ALREADY KNOW… A number cube is rolled. P(3 or even number) = A day of the week is randomly selected. P(Tuesday or Thursday) = P(a day beginning with S or Wednesday) = P(A or B) = P(A) + P(B)

COMPOUND EVENT Consists of more than one simple event Example: Flipping two coins Flipping a coin and rolling a die

INDEPENDENT EVENTS The outcome of one event does NOT affect the outcome of another event

FLIPPING A COIN & ROLLING A DIE List out all of the outcomes for the compound event: P(heads) = P(odd number) = P(heads and an odd number)=

DEPENDENT EVENTS The outcome of one event DOES affect the outcome of another event. You must be careful in finding each of your probabilities! But, you can still multiply!

EXAMPLE! Fran selects 2 pieces of fruit from a basket with 8 oranges and 4 apples without replacing the first fruit. Find the probability that she selects two oranges.

EXAMPLE! A deck of cards contains 3 hearts, 5 diamonds, 4 clubs, and 5 spades. P(hearts, followed by diamonds) = P(2 clubs) = P(diamond, followed by spade)=

DISJOINT/MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE EVENTS Cannot happen at the same time Example: You cannot get heads AND tails.
