Jesus Healed an Official’s Son (John 4:46-54)  The setting (4:46)  This event takes place at the end of the Judean ministry two days after meeting the woman from Sychar at the well (4:43) 1  The location is “Cana of Galilee where He had made the water wine.”  “a certain royal official” – an official of Herod Antipas’ court Unit Christ Connection: Jesus’ miracles demonstrated His divine authority. 5

Jesus Healed an Official’s Son (John 4:46-54)  The crisis – a desperately ill son (4:47-48)  The official had heard of Jesus’ miracles, (4:45, 47) and  “was requesting” (a continual persistence) 2  Jesus apparently rebukes the official AND the crowd (4:48) 3  The response – faith (4:49-50)  The official demonstrates his faith which John confirms in the next verse (4:49) 4  Jesus responds to the official’s faith (4:50) Unit Christ Connection: Jesus’ miracles demonstrated His divine authority. 6

Truth for today.—” Another note is sounded by... the... narrative[ ] in chapter 4. It is the importance of invitation.... The father “begged him to come down” (v. 47, RSV) to where his son was.... Jesus was able to do his work because he was accepted. In contrast, remember how on another occasion men begged Jesus to leave their territory (Mark 5:17). He did. But after all, this was the condition stated in John 1:12. God’s gifts are always ‘to all who received him” (RSV). They still are.’” J. P. Allen, John, in The Teachers Bible Commentary (ed. H. Franklin Paschall and Herschel H. Hobbs; Nashville: Broadman and Holman Publishers, 1972), Unit Christ Connection: Jesus’ miracles demonstrated His divine authority. 8

Jesus Cleansed a Leper (Matt 8:1-4; Mark 1:40-45; Luke 5:12-16) Unit Christ Connection: Jesus’ miracles demonstrated His divine authority. 21

Unit Christ Connection: Jesus was revealed as the fulfillment of Scripture, the promised Savior.22

Jesus Cleansed a Leper (Matt 8:1-4; Mark 1:40-45; Luke 5:12-16)  The setting – sometime, not necessarily immediately, after the Sermon on the Mount in an unknown city (Matt 8:1; neither Mark nor Luke specify a time for this event)  The crisis – a leper begs Jesus for healing (Mark 1:40) 1 Unit Christ Connection: Jesus’ miracles demonstrated His divine authority. 23

Jesus Cleansed a Leper (Matt 8:1-4; Mark 1:40-45; Luke 5:12-16)  The response – Jesus agrees to heal the man (Mark 1:41-42) 2  The result (Mark 1:43-45)  Stern warning (Mark 1:43-44) 3  Command to offer the appropriate sacrifice (Mark 1:44) 4  Disobedience and the consequence – Jesus could no longer preach without being mobbed (Mark 1:45) Unit Christ Connection: Jesus’ miracles demonstrated His divine authority. 25

Jesus Cleansed a Leper (Matt 8:1-4; Mark 1:40-45; Luke 5:12-16)  Observation  The account of the leper gives us an instructive example of the prayer that God answers: 1. It was earnest and desperate—imploring Him. 2. It was reverent— kneeling down to Him. 3. It was humble and submissive— “If You are willing.” 4. It was believing— “You can.” 5. It acknowledged need— “make me clean.” 6. It was specific—not “bless me” but “make me clean.” 7. It was personal—“make me clean.” 8. It was brief—five words in the original. 5 Unit Christ Connection: Jesus’ miracles demonstrated His divine authority. 26
