Breaking News: Whooping Cough Outbreaks in West Chester Area and Great Valley School Districts

Whooping Cough (Pertussis) Pertussis is a highly contagious bacterial disease that causes uncontrollable, violent coughing The coughing can make it hard to breathe A deep "whooping" sound is often heard when the patient tries to take a breath

Vaccination DTaP vaccine – Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Acellular Pertussis Protection provided by the DTaP vaccine received in childhood wears off as kids get older, so preteens and teens need a booster shot known as Tdap

Vaccination High school students who have not had the Tdap vaccine will not be permitted to return to school until 21 days from the last exposure or until they received one dose of Tdap

This depicts a community in which no one is immunized and an outbreak occurs

Some of the population is immunized but not enough to confer community immunity.

A critical portion of the population is immunized, protecting most community members.

What Do You Think? Should all Americans be required by law to get a whooping cough vaccine? Should they be required to get a flu shot?
