The facts of Mount Olympus include that it is the highest mountain in Greece at 9,570 feet (2,919 meters), and that it rises virtually from sea level, making its appearance all the more impressive. It is also no surprise that the ancient Greeks held Mount Olympus in very special esteem. It marked the northern limit of Greece proper, so it was the edge of their world. This was not a mountain that people dared to climb, so the ancient Greeks could literally believe that the gods lived here.

Supreme ruler Lord of the Sky Rain-god Cloud-gatherer Greater power than all other divinities together Not omnipotent or omnicscient Could be opposed and decived Very disloyal to his wife, Hera. Father to many lower divinities (i.e. Hercules)

Zeus’s wife and sister Protector of marriage Queen of immortals Most beautiful of the goddesses Punishes the many women Zeus fell in love with Her anger towards Zeus’s loves followed the women and their children Hated Trojans, that’s why they lost the Trojan war Protector of heroes and the inspirer of heroic deeds

3 rd brother among the Olympians Ruler over the dead and the underworld Also called Pluto God of wealth, of the precious metals hidden in the earth Had a far-famed cap/helmet which made whoever wore it invisible Rare that he left his dark realm to visit Olympus or the earth Not a welcome visitor A terrible, not an evil god Wife was Persephone whom he carried away from the earth and made Queen of the Lower World. King of the Dead, not Death himself

Ruler of the sea Zeus’s brother 2 nd only to Zeus in eminence Wife was Amphitrite, a granddaughter of the Titan, Ocean Had a splendid palace beneath the sea, but was often to be found in Olympus Gave the first horse to man Storm and calm were under his control When he drove in his golden chariot over the waters, the thunder of the waves sank into stillness, and tranquil peace followed his smooth-rolling wheels Carried his trident, a three-pronged spear, with which he would shake and shatter whatever he pleased

Goddess of wisdom, warfare and skill. Daughter of Zeus alone. No mother bore her. Full-grown and in full armor, she sprang from Zeus’s head Fierce and ruthless battle-goddess Protector of civilized life, of handicrafts and agriculture Inventor of the bridle Zeus’s favorite child. Trusted her to carry his armor and thunderbolt Embodiment of reason and purity.

Son of Zeus and Leto Born in the little island of Delos Beautiful figure Master musician who delights Olympus as he plays on his golden lyre Lord of the silver bow Archer-god, far-shooting The Healer God of Light and truth Sun-god His name Phoebus means “brilliant” or “shining” Helios, child of the Titan Hyperion A direct link between gods and men, guiding men to know the divine will, showing them how to make peace with the gods

Zeus’s sister Has no distinct personality and she plays no part in the myths Goddess of the Hearth Symbol of the home, around which the newborn child must be carried before it could be received into the family Each city had a public hearth sacred to Hestia, where the fire was never allowed to go out

Apollo’s twin sister, daughter of Zeus and Leto Lover of woods Lady of Wild Things Huntsman-in-chief to the gods Careful to preserve the young The protectress of dewy youth Kept the Greek Fleet from sailing to Troy until they sacrificed a maiden to her Fierce and revengeful Moon-goddess Confused for Apollo Identified with Hecate Goddess of the Crossways, which were held to be ghostly places of evil magic In her is shown most vividly the uncertainty between good and evil

God of war Son of Zeus and Hera, both of whom detested him Murderous, bloodstained, the incarnate curse of mortals, yet runs away when he is wounded Has a train of attendants on the battlefield which should inspire anyone with confidence: Discord, Strife, Goddess of War (walks beside him), Terror, Trembling, and Panic As they move, the voice of groaning arises behind them and the earth streams with blood He is little more than a symbol of war

Son of Zeus and Maia (daughter of Atlas) Graceful and swift of motion On his feet were winged sandals, wings were on his low-crowned hat and on his magic wand, the Caduceus Zeus’s Messenger, who “flies as fleet as thought to do his bidding” The shrewdest and most cunning The Master Thief, who started upon his career before he was a day old: by nightfall he had stolen away Apollo’s herds God of Commerce and the Market, protector of traders Solemn guide of the dead, the Divine Herald who led souls down to their last home

Goddess of Love and Beauty Laughter-loving goddess, who laughed sweetly or mockingly at those her wiles had conquered Irresistible goddess who stole away even the wits of the wise Daughter of Zeus and Dione Sprung from the foam of the sea Winds flee before her and the storm clouds She moves in radiant light Without her there is no joy nor loveliness anywhere Shown as treacherous and malicious, exerting a deadly and destructive power over men Wife of Hephaestus

God of Fire Son of Zeus and Hera, sometimes of Hera alone, who bore him in retaliation for Zeus’s having brought forth Athena Among the perfectly beautiful immortals he only was ugly and lame When Hera saw that he was born deformed, cast him out of heaven The workman of the immortals, their armorer and smith, who makes their dwellings and their furnishings as well as their weapons In his workshop he has handmaidens he has forged out of gold who can move and who help him in his work Kindly, peace-loving god, popular on earth as in heaven Protector of the smiths
