d’Alba: Barbera d'Alba DOC is located in Italy's northwestern region Piedmont. The zone includes the Langhe hills around the town of Alba, overlapping the same zones as Barolo and Barbaresco also extending into the Roero zone. All aspects of the wine growing, making and bottling must take place in the d’Alba municipality. d’Asti: Barbera d’Asti is one of the most famous DOCs in Italy's north- western Piedmont wine region. It was upgraded to its DOCG classification in 2008, adding to Piedmont's already impressive array at this highest level of Italian wine classification. The Barbera d'Asti title cover the area around the town of Asti, and exclusively focuses on red wines made from Barbera. All aspects of the wine growing, making and bottling must take place in the d’Asti municipality. What this means for Mazzoni Barbera: MAZZONI: A 100% Barbera from the Piemonte region in the DOC zone. This wine is grown and made in Piemonte but it is bottled in Montalcino (Il Poggione estate) for quality control purposes. Since the wine is bottled outside of the Piemonte region it cannot be classified with the d’Alba or d’Asti designation. Barbera Definitions 16
