Myth #3 It’s OK Now to Eat Pork

Is it OK Now to Eat Pork, Shellfish, and other “Unclean” Animals? Peter had a dream in Acts 10. A sheet full of unclean animals. He was told, “Kill and eat.” Was he being told to violate the clean and unclean food laws of Leviticus 11?

Is it OK Now to Eat Pork, Shellfish, and other “Unclean” Animals? A rule of interpreting the Bible is to let the Bible interpret itself. PETER INTERPRETS HIS OWN DREAM. He tells Cornelius that God showed him not to call any man unclean, if God said he was clean. Peter never thought his dream was about food. There’s no indication he ever changed the way he ate, refusing to eat unclean animals. In Acts 11, the other disciples wonder why Peter went into the home of a Gentile. Peter tells the other disciples about his dream. They understand that Peter’s dream was about Gentiles. Joseph had a dream about wheat: he knew the wheat was his brothers. Gideon heard a dream about a loaf of barley: he knew the barley was his sword. Peter dreamed about unclean animals: he and the other disciples knew that the animals represented Gentiles.

Is it OK Now to Eat Pork, Shellfish, and other “Unclean” Animals? At the Jerusalem Council in Acts 15, James and the other apostles debate what Torah instructions Gentiles should be required to obey. James suggests just four laws: no meat with blood, from strangled animals, or offered to idols, and no sexual immorality. The church takes this to mean that Torah has been done away with and it’s OK now to eat food prohibited by Leviticus 11. BUT! James goes on to say…

Is it OK Now to Eat Pork, Shellfish, and other “Unclean” Animals? …For the law of Moses has been preached in every city from the earliest times and is read in the synagogues on every Sabbath.” Acts James’ plan is for the Gentiles to start with four laws, then learn the rest as they study Torah, in the synagogue, every Shabbat! It’s hard for Gentiles to understand why the Jews would have such a problem fellowshipping with Gentiles. But a Gentile may have just come from a temple prostitute or sacrificing to an idol. It was very gracious for the Jewish believers of the Jerusalem Council to allow Gentiles into fellowship if Gentiles kept just these four laws. Misunderstanding the Jerusalem Council has caused tremendous suffering over the centuries. For Bible believers, the food laws of Leviticus 11 still apply. It was bad biblical interpretation to think they ever went away.
