What is Warrior Pride? Warrior Pride is an Army-wide substance abuse campaign designed to reduce and deter drug use and alcohol abuse among Soldiers. Soldiers are America’s Warriors and should have Pride in themselves, their unit, and the United States Army. Being proud of who you are as a Soldier and the duty you perform for your country and your people is incompatible with using drugs and abusing alcohol. Warrior Pride provides educational products for leaders, Soldiers and the ASAP staff. The next slide will explain what “Pride” should mean to Soldiers in regard to substance abuse. 2

Commander’s Responsibilities As the commander you should encourage teamwork and build pride in each Soldier! Educate your Soldiers that Warrior Pride and Soldier Values are incompatible with drug use and alcohol abuse. Deglamorize alcohol use. Conduct monthly “Smart Testing” to deter drug use Post the Warrior Pride posters in common areas. Soldiers know what is important to their commander. A commander who regularly emphasizes that drug use and alcohol abuse will not be tolerated and takes actions against violators will send a strong message to the troops. If you think it’s important, then the troops will too! 4

Example message – use these or make up your own! Messages Example message – use these or make up your own! Maintain your Warrior Pride – Don’t Drink and Drive! Don’t leave a Soldier behind on the battlefield, in a bar or at a party. I am a Warrior - I am Drug Free. Warrior Pride 0-0-1: Warriors have Zero DUIs, Zero underage drinking incidents, and don’t drink more than one drink per hour 5

Summary Substance abuse affects your unit readiness and reduces unit morale. Soldiers who use drugs and abuse alcohol miss more hours of work and are less productive when they are at work. Educate and train your Soldiers. Teach Army Values and Warrior Pride! Rehabilitate substance abusers who have potential for continued service, but discharge those that do not! 9
