Success Planner Student Planner and Study Guide IMPROVE YOUR MEMORY AND RECALL

Develop Memory and Recall u Once you gain knowledge it is likely you will forget information over time u If you revise that knowledge you can regain the data again u Continuous revision can recall data faster and longer

Develop Memory and Memory Skills  We forget what we learn very quickly.  We remember things much better if we (1) go over them very soon after we first learnt them.

Recall Fact: u If you are to revise that knowledge once gained, then you will be able to (2) recall that data faster and retain information for a longer period of time.

% Recall Time Recall Information Over Time For The Typical Student Topic Test 1 st Semester Exams Final Exams Line 1 Initial Knowledge Gained Line 5 Line 3 Revision Line 2 Line 4Line 6

Strategies to Retain and Recall Information  9 Useful strategies a learner can use to retain and recall information when it is needed: (3) Visualise Categorise (4) Repeat Rhyme (5) Acronym Abbreviate Acronymic Sentence Pegword Keyword

Acronyms u Forming an acronym is a (6) good strategy to remember information in any order that can be remembered.

Memory Triggers u Acronym – is a word that is formed from the (7) first letter of each fact to be remembered u For example: (8) Roygbiv

Memory Triggers  Acronyms R Red O Orange Y Yellow G Green B Blue I Indigo V Violet Colours of the Rainbow

Memory Triggers  Mnemonics – similar to acronyms but instead of a word you (9) remember a phrase.  Usually the phrase is nonsense and the craziness of it helps you to remember it.  For example: The order of classification for living things:  K, P, C, F, O, G, S

Memory Triggers Example (1) K Kingdom P Phylum C Class O Order F Family G Genus S Species K Kings P Produce C Crowns O Only F For G Galant S Soldiers

Memory Triggers Example (2) K Kingdom P Phylum C Class O Order F Family G Genus S Species Kings play chess on fine grained sand K Kings P Play C Chess O On F Fine G Grained S Sand
