KASPIL2 Report

Objectives of the U.S.A 1.To be a Naval Power 2.To Spread of Protestantism 3.To Control Supply of Coconut,Sugar and Tobacco

Objectives of Japan 1.To attack and control the US military bases and prevent any opposition to japan’s military 2.Strategic Location of the Philippines in Controlling the Southern Resource Area 3.Philippines is Rich in Resources Needed For War Like Cotton, Lumber, Manganese and Abaka

Objectives (Comparison) They are not similar because they desire different powers and commodities. Apart from that, United States wanted to spread Protestantism while Japan wanted to use the Philippines for strategic purposes.

Objectives (Conclusion) The United States seemed to have long-term plans for the Philippines ever since the time they colonized it. Overtime, dependence on the United States started to develop within the hearts and minds of the Filipinos.

Rhetoric 1.White man’s burden 2.Benevolent Assimilation Proclamation

Rhetoric Greater East-Asia Co- prosperity Sphere

Rhetoric (Comparison) Both wanted to impose their own ideals, therefore replacing the impression that has been left by the previous colonizer. In their own ways, they wanted the Philippines to abide to their rules and ways of life.

Rhetoric (Conclusion) The Philippines was a victim of false hopes and colonization because of those rhetorics

Politics of the U.S.A Tydings-McDuffie Law Commonwealth Government Philippine Bill of 1902 Jones Law Creation of House Of Representatives and Senate Creation of Philippine Assembly

Politics of Japan Creation of PCPI Political Parties abolished and created KALIBAPI or Kapisanan sa Paglilingkod sa Bagong Pilipinas Grant of Independence in 1943 Creation of central executive commission Creation of Japanese Military administration Tydings-McDuffie Law

Politics (Comparison) They are not similar. They have imposed different sets of laws though both seemed to have the same intentions and that is to remodel current Philippine government and promise independence.

Politics (Conclusion) The Americans wanted to control the Philippines by implementing laws, while the Japanese wanted control using brute force Most of the laws that they established was to have more power from us. As the Philippines were recovering from the Spanish regime, in creation of their new government, colonizers took advantage on giving the country “aid” in the form of promising laws and acts that falsely ensures freedom.

Economic Payne-Aldrich Act Underwood-Simmons Act Homestead Free Patent Selling of Friar Lands Infrastructure projects like Baguio

Economic Black Market and buy and sell through selling of cable wires and electric wires to the japanese Philippine financial institutions were crippled, isolated and denied of hard currency Inflation due to lack of hard currency Introdution of Mickey Mouse Money High demand but there was no supply of goods Hoarding of basic commodities Cotton and copra was assigned in the Philippines to be planted

Economic (Comparison) With regards to the economics, it is evident that both are different. The Americans provided laws in relations to tarrifs, lands, imports, exports and this improved the economy of the Philippines while the Japanese used Philippine resources as much as they can and this caused caused the economy to decline.

Cultural (Conclusion) Both colonizers took advantage of our national resources. More products are offered to us but then we lost more than what we gained The motives of both colonizers can be seen clearly here though the American economic strategy can be considered as a cover for their initial plan to take advantage on exporting goods. The Japanese was clear in torturing the Filipinos by starving them.

Socio-cultural Religious-Educational Introduction to American culture Public school system Freedom of Religion Change of names of public places. Filipino newspapers and magazines flourished

Socio-cultural Religious-Educational Atrocities, violence, brutalities like slapping of people and torture Low morality, lack of discipline and dignity of people Comfort Women Education was only under the Japanese Media was controlled Radio Taiso introduced Disease Control Newspapers and radio were censored Brutalities of Kempetai Many died due to hunger and disease Creation of the district and neighborhood associations. Golden Age of Tagalog and Local Language

Socio-cultural Religious-Educational (Comparison) These show and teach American and Japanese culture to Filipinos Not similar because we gained so much from the Americans like industrialization and modernization but for the Japanese, we lost so much. No as the Japanese showed negative impact on the culture of the Philippines including censorship and restrictions while the American period helped flourish the country’s culture by imparting their own

Socio-cultural Religious-Educational (Conclusion) They are different in such as way that even though they spread part of the culture, it has caused several unpredictable effects to that of the Filipinos. The Americans was able to introduce public school systems, change names of public places, and flourish newspapers and magazines. On the other hand, the Japanese censored newspapers and media and every single thing was under the Japanese rule.

FILIPINO RESPONSE U.S.A. Supporters 1.MAKAPILI 2.Benigno Ramos 3.Francisco de la rama 4.Felipe buencamino 5.Sergio Osmeña Jr. Japan Supporters 1.Marking's Guerillas 2.Hunter's Guerillas 3.HUKBALAHAP

Filipino Response (Comparison) They believe that befriending the Americans would bring them independence or that it would be better if we were a state of America. Similar because these people resided to the US and the Japanese people No as some of the pro-American people were just forced to sign peace treaties and some served as political instruments during both eras. MAKAPILI on the other hand was delegated by the gov't.

Filipino Response (Conclusion) Some Filipinos had their own reasons for siding with the country's colonizers; and some were also forced.

FILIPINO RESPONSE Pro / Supporters 1.MAKAPILI 2.Benigno Ramos 3.Francisco de la rama 4.Felipe buencamino 5.Sergio Osmeña Jr. PRO ANTI Anti / Non-supporters 1.Marking's Guerillas 2.Hunter's Guerillas 3.HUKBALAHAP
