1 John 1:6-8 A passage about living by the truth

If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth. 1 John 1:6

Thoughts on Maintaining Your Fellowship with God Not the same as relationship Requires that we “live in the truth” Possible to “lie” to others and ourselves

Walking in Truth means simply living our daily lives with nothing hidden from God, ourselves and others Means letting God’s light touch every aspect of our lives Means a commitment to the truth beyond embarrassment

Characteristics of Truth The fallen nature fears it The renewed spirit loves it Reveals our true natures Is always personal Will set us free if received Will discipline us if rejected Is balanced with mercy

But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, His Son, purifies us from all sin. 1 John 1:7

Things Hidden in Darkness Prevent fellowship with God Prevent fellowship with other believers Prevent cleansing by the blood of Christ

Living in Truth Constant working of the Holy Spirit in our lives Believers used in our lives as the “body of Christ” Constant defeat of the devil’s plans for us

If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 1 John 1:8

Deceiving Ourselves and Others About Sin Comes from pride Will block the grace of God to us (breakdowns!) Produces “hypocrites” (play actors) Sets us up to believe more and greater lies
