JEM IS SCOUT’S BROTHER WHO LIKES TO SPEND TIME WITH HIS SISTER. HE LIKES TO HAVE FUN AND NEVER BACKS DOWN FROM ANYTHING. SOMETIMES HE SEPARATES HIMSELF FROM SCOUT, BUT HE STILL LOVES HER DEARLY. HE ALSO PROTECTED SCOUT IN THE STORY. THROUGHOUT THE STORY, DIFFERENT EVENTS AND MOMENTS LED TO HIS GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT, AND HIS REALIZATION OF SOCIETY WHICH MADE HIM A MATURE YOUNG MAN. Altercation With Mrs. Dubose Mrs. Dubose was an elderly racist woman who the kids passed by everyday on the way home. She would always yell mean things to the children when they walked by. The kids initially did not care about what she said, until she talked about her father, which hit home. Jem reacted negatively by ruining the flowers in her yard and leaving her yard very messy. In result, Jem must go to her house everyday and read for a month

Standing Up For His Father, But Not Listening To Him Sometimes, Jem did not listen to his father’s instruction. The night Atticus had the conversation with the men at the jail regarding Tom Robinson’s case, Jem snuck out of the house and tried to save him As Atticus was talking to the men, Jem basically interrupted the conversation. Then, as Atticus told him to leave, he wouldn’t and was disobeying his father. This represented that Jem still needed time to mature.

Realizing His Father’s Madness Later on in the book, Jem begins to realize why Atticus does what he does, and starts to understand him. As Atticus presented his case very well, Jem was sure he had already won the case. "He's not supposed to lean, Reverend, but don't fret, we've won it," he said wisely (279).

When Jem Realizes The World As the jury read its verdict, Jem’s heart sank, and he felt each “guilty” as if he was being stabbed. Then, Jem cried, and was very mad and felt cheated by the jury, and others who went against Robinson He then realized how society was, and how he would have to deal with crazy people from now on. As his father picked up this case, he got to see how blacks were and felt that they should be treated equally

Putting The Event Behind Him A few days later, Scout brings up the case again Jem then tells her to be quiet and never talks about it again Shows maturity- As he is trying to remove a bad image from his mind about racism and bias in the town
