Seven Deadly Sins Series Gluttony v. Temperance Proverbs 23:17-21

GLUTTONY: Habitual excess in eating or drinking or other appetites. Unrestrained and voracious indulgence. Can result in addiction and slavery to appetites. Uncontrolled self-centeredness that manifests in laziness, over-eating, and other excesses.

Do not let your heart envy sinners, but always be zealous for the fear of the Lord. 18 There is surely a future hope for you, and your hope will not be cut off. 19 Listen, my son/daughter, and be wise, and keep your heart on the right path. 20 Do not join those who drink too much wine or gorge themselves on meat, 21 for drunkards and gluttons become poor, and drowsiness clothes them in rags. ~ Proverbs 23:17-21

For, as I have often told you before and now say again even with tears, many live as enemies of the cross of Christ. 19 Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is on earthly things. ~ Philippians 3:18-19

But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, 21 who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body. ~ Philippians 3:20-21

TEMPERANCE (Self-Control): Moderation governed by virtue instead of compulsion. Self-control over excess. Restraint of appetites and desires. Not ruled by impulse. Calmness.

Several days later Felix came with his wife Drusilla, who was a Jewess. He sent for Paul and listened to him as he spoke about faith in Christ Jesus. 25 As Paul discoursed on righteousness, self-control [temperance] and the judgment to come, Felix was afraid and said, “That’s enough for now! You may leave. When I find it convenient, I will send for you.” 26 At the same time, he was hoping that Paul would offer him a bribe, so he sent for him frequently and talked with him. ~ Acts 24:24-26

WAYS TO RECEIVE TEMPERANCE 1. Affirm who you are (son/daughter of God). 2. Invite the Holy Spirit to fill every area of your life—especially places you struggle. Ask Jesus for self control (temperance). 3. Offer your body, soul, spirit as worship to Jesus. 4. Feed your mind with the Bible. 5. Avoid places of temptation. 6. Have others pray with you.

So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. ~ 1 Cor. 10:31
