TURNER COTTERMAN CLEMSON UNIVERSITY IEEE, WISE INTERN 31 JULY 2013 TRANSFORMING AMERICA’S INTELLIGENT ELECTRICAL INFRASTRUCTURE ENERGY STORAGE TECHNOLOGIES:

IN THIS PRESENTATION Background of energy issues Complexity of our nation’s system Relevant legislation What is energy storage? Advantages of storage Types of storage Conclusions Policy recommendations

BACKGROUND Issues Global populations are increasing Nonrenewable energy resources (e.g. coal, oil, natural gas) are being used up Growing demand for energy (digitization) Climate change occurring at an alarming rate Approaching energy crisis? Solutions Shift dependence to renewable energy resources (e.g. wind, solar, hydropower) Reinvent lifestyles and technologies to be more efficient Improve and strengthen our electrical infrastructure Energy storage technologies will have a strong part to play

COMPLEXITY OF CURRENT U.S. ELECTRICAL GRID Source: FEMA

LEGISLATION Energy Independence and Security Act (2007) Awareness of storage technologies, electricity infrastructure American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (2009) Funding, further awareness FERC: Orders 890, 755 California AB 2514 (2010) One of the first state examples STORAGE Act (2013)

OVERVIEW OF ENERGY STORAGE Technology to store generated electricity in order to perform useful operation at a later time Supportive of generation systems Increases adoption & profitability of renewable energy Energy storage can: Improve efficiency of existing systems Defer costly upgrades to transmission/distribution infrastructure Helps utilities meet peak load demands Supports the smart grid Provides resiliency to the grid Energy reserves for natural disasters, power outages

CONCLUSIONS Choosing specific energy storage system is both location- and application-specific Cost is major prohibitive consideration in implementation of these systems Combination of government assistance, private industry involvement, public support

POLICY RECOMMENDATIONS 1.Pass pending federal legislation and develop state- level proposals for energy storage 2.Federal and state governments must use their abilities to encourage financial investment by private industry 3.Streamline and simplify regulatory requirements for energy storage developments 4.Increase public awareness of the need to adopt energy storage and smart grid technologies 5.Continue to advance private and public research of storage technologies 6.Promote the development and implementation of international standards for energy storage
