Refusal of the Call Kira Tafoya and Kameron Blomquist

 Initially, when the call to arms is received, the hero refuses it, for a variety of different reasons.  The call will come over and over again, until accidentally, or purposefully, the adventure begins, or is even still refused.  “It’s not my job” (Spiderman)  When a cop runs after a thief, he asks for help, and ‘Spiderman’ replies with “That’s your job, not mine.”  “It’s crazy” (Lord of the Rings)  Bilbo Baggins wants nothing to do with the adventure Gandalf presents him with, simply because it’s crazy. A ‘mad adventure’.  ”It’s late” (Star Wars)  Skywalker refuses his call because he is afraid that he’ll be late home. After his aunt and uncle are killed, he goes because there was nothing left for him on Tatooine.

 Eventually, something happens to make the hero change their mind and respond to the call. This could take hours, days, months, or even years. Someone dies, giving them no reason to stay where they are (Star Wars)  Skywalker’s aunt and uncle are killed, giving him no reason to stay on Tattooine “Threatened” with the life of their child (Odyssey)  Odysseus’ son is thrown in front of his plow when he tries to act crazy to avoid going to war Revenge (Spiderman)  After his uncle Ben is killed, Peter goes around trying to find who killed him, finally answering “The Call” to be the Spiderman who saves people

 After the hero has accepted the call, throughout the rest of his journey he may Gain a sense of self awareness and control Will only respond to the highest answers to problems faced in life.  Though if the offer is refused, the hero will often Lose power of affirmative actions, becoming a victim who needs saving, rather than the savior. His ‘flowering world’ can become a wasteland and his life seems meaningless. Many heroes try to hold onto what is real to them. They don’t like changes in the world, and may work to stop them.
