The Hackleburg tornado tore through 6 counties and left a trail of devastation over 100 miles long. This tornado was the deadliest of all tornados that touched down that day and left over $1 billion in damage.

Damage photos from Phil Campbell in Franklin County. Trees were debarked and homes were swept clean from their foundations. The bottom photo shows pavement removed from one area. This particular damage is common with EF-5 tornadoes. A local TV station’s camera network captured the tornado as it moved from Lawrence County into southwestern Limestone County. The tornado was at least a mile wide at this point along its path, which was later determined by NWS Storm Survey teams.
