My Thesis Han and Rome had varying attitudes towards technology because technology played an integral role in the development of the Han and Roman Empires. Han attitudes toward technology were mostly positive if it helped the common people. However, some Romans disliked technology because it did not benefit the upper class, while others approved of technology if it added grandeur to the Empire. Roman attitudes towards technology helping lower class people may be more negative due to their heavy dependence upon slavery.

Harmful technology was frowned upon. Han Guan criticizes the government’s iron tools because they are crude, not functional, and expensive (2).
