Deceptive Advertising is the art of making whole lies out of half truths. -Edgar Shoaff

Ethics = Moral Philosophy What is Ethics??? Moral Philosophy = principles concerning the distinction between right and wrong Ethics = the distinction between right and wrong THEN

Profession Means Affirmed by the Public We went from a trade to a profession in the early 50’s when we introduced fluoride, potentially putting our trade out of business Dr. Masella added that, Professionalism is a set of values, or overarching principles to which a doctor is held.

Etiquette the customary code of polite behavior in society or among members of a particular profession or group

Just because we’re capable of reasoning, doesn’t mean we are reasonable. –Alexander Hamilton

It’s beliefs and emotions that drive most human behavior, not rational thinking.

The BIG ? Is it possible to teach ethics to a dental student?

Children don’t have the neurological capacity for ethical reasoning. Limbic system makes decisions, not pre-frontal lobe. As we mature, we learn to keep the prefrontal cortex active, raising the activation of the limbic system. We can learn to activate the limbic system.

You can learn to keep prefrontal cortex activated, while suppressing the amygdalic part of the brain.

The strongest determinant of behavior is what we perceive to be the behavior of our peers.

Dentists who are ethical, believe their peers are doing the same. And dentists who are unethical, believe other dentists are doing the same.

ETHICS IS CONTAGEOUS, but so is the reverse
