Possible existence of neutral hyper-nucleus with strangeness -2 and its production SPN 2014, Changsha, Dec , 2014 Institute of High Energy Physics Qiang Zhao Institute of High Energy Physics, CAS and Theoretical Physics Center for Science Facilities (TPCSF), CAS In collaboration with J.-M. Richard and Q. Wang, [nucl-th]

Outline 1. Background 2. Phenomenology of neutral hypernuclei 3. Brief summary

1. Background

Nuclear chart with strangeness Λ Multi-strangeness system such as Neutron star Extending drip-line! Interesting phenomena concerning the neutron halo have been observed near the neutron drip line of light nuclei. How does the halo structure change when a Λ particle is injected into an unstable nucleus? What’s the role played by the  -N interaction in the formation of neutral hypernucleus? Slide from E. Hiyama  5 He 5 He

Local source adopted for 4-baryon system: With m  =890 MeV at the SU(3) flavor symmetry point, L= 3.4, 4.5 and 6.7 fm, and b=0.145 fm, LQCD calculations are performed using an isotropic clover quark action [S. Beane et al, NPLQCD, PRC87, (2013)]. Baryon effective mass plot Some hints from the first principle

Experimental evidence for neutral baryon system? A. Gal and H. Garcilazo, Phys. Lett. B 736, 93 (2014), [arXiv: [nucl-th]]. H. Garcilazo and A. Valcarce, Phys. Rev. C 89, (2014). E. Hiyama, S. Ohnishi, B.F. Gibson and T.A. Rijken, Three-body structure of the nn  system with  N-  N coupling, arXiv: [nucl-th] Can we tolerate a neutral baryon system at all within the present available nuclear models? Marques et al, “Detection of neutron clusters”, PRC65, (2002) HypHI Collaboration, “Search for evidence of 3  n by observing d + π − and t + π − final states in …”, PRC88, (R) (2013) Better understanding of N  -N  potential is required.

Thomas collapse The ratio of 3-body to 2-body bound state energies, E3/E2, becomes very large if the range of the interaction decreases. Equivalently, for a given (short) range, E3/E2   if the coupling g approaches (from above) the minimal value g 2 required to bind two particles. The potential energy is written as where v is attractive or contains attractive parts. The minimal coupling g 3 to bind three particles is smaller than g 2, so that for g 3 < g < g 2 there is a “Borromean” 3-body bound state whose two-body subsystems are unbound.

Binding condition for a Borromean system: Decompose the Hamiltonian H into sub-Hamiltonians: H is hardly negative if H i is positive. The scale is set such that the pair (mi;mj) is bound for gij > 1. This drawing corresponds to M/m = 1.2.

Domain forbidding three or four-body binding 3-body binding energy E 3 as a function of the effective range r eff for three different potentials, with the 2-body scattering length is fixed to a large negative value a = −10, i.e., just below the threshold for 2-body binding. Possible binding due to 3-body force?

2. Exploratory study of neutral hypernuclei with S=  2

How to organize the (  nn) system? Wang, Richard and Zhao, [nucl-th] T=  4 n=(  nn) S=0, I=1, L=0 No Pauli blocking Groundstate: J P =0 +

K , p K1 n, p 2 n, p 4 p, p 1 p, p 3 n, p 2 n, p 4 , p 1 , p 3 K , p K2  0, p  d, p D1 d, p D2 T, p T Production mechanism for (  nn) in deuteron-deuteron collision The two K  production is via the elementary process, pp   K  K . The intermediate S 11 (1535) excitations is sizeable near threshold. Wang, Richard and Zhao, [nucl-th]

Production mechanism for (  nn) Wang, Richard and Zhao, [nucl-th] Assumption: The S-wave nuclear wavefunctions are dominant.

Missing mass spectrum for (  nn) M(K  K  ) Recoil mass spectrum of K  K  Wang, Richard and Zhao, [nucl-th] By tagging the two K+ in the final state, the production of the (  nn) will suffer nearly no background at all. The signal will peak at the mass of the (  nn).

The interference between the double nucleon Born term and double S 11 (1535) excitation plays a significant role. Total cross section for (  nn)

3. Brief summary 1.The neutral hypernuclei, if exist, would bring important insights into the three-body nuclear force. 2.More elaborate model-building is needed for the study of neutral hypernuclei. 3.The (  nn) system, if bound, can be searched in deuteron-deuteron scattering in the future at FAIR or J- PARC.

Thanks for your attention!
