Activity sites of Light House Program

Activities of light House Program The activities of field groups were site selection, implementation of technologies, collecting field data for pre and post project implementation, field inspection and training of farmers and training of trainers.

Implemented Activities 1.Discussed with township managers, plant protection staff & work groups before starting the implementations in all project sites. 2. Selected technologies integration plots (2.5ha each) (Light House) in 13 project sites. Then selected another five plots (0.405 ha/ 1acre each) from neighboring farms for farmer’s practices. 3.Made land preparation and using good quality varieties/seeds, optimal seed rates (1-2 baskets = kg) using Vietnam drum seeder and direct seeding line sowing method.

Implemented Activities (continued) 4.Used NPK Fertilizers at recommended rates. 5.Applied timely and correctly used of pre or post emergence herbicides application due to the type of weeds infestation in different locations. 6. Checked weed characterization at 30 DAS in each site. Rooted up the weeds in 5 plots (1 sq m each), cut above the root, and identified & weighed each weed species and recorded.

Implemented Activities (continued) 7.Implimented alternate wetting and drying method by using perched tube, especially in project sites where water scarcity problem was faced. 8.Placed lower half portion of Perched tube at the average level of the plot and removed the soil inside the perched tube. Made irrigation only when there were no water left inside the tube and recorded the frequency of irrigation and cost of fuel.

Implemented Activities (continued) 9. At the harvest time, following proper post harvest management was done in project sites. -Correct time of harvesting, -threshing by using thresher, -proper sun drying and -hermetic sealed storage.

Recommendations Vietnam drum seeder application with herbicides using become more properly among the farmers. - Require more providing of drum seeder for poor farmers; -Training and educating for the correct & safety use of herbicides should be accelerated; - Import and providing fertilizer by multiple ways; -Joint ventures should be fulfill the fertilizer market requirements; -More training and demonstration of SSNM technology should be carried out under integration of LH activities. Korea moisture meter has been already provided to some townships in upper Myanmar by JICA project. -Farmers cannot properly use it and poor knowledge of not only materials but also technology; -Instead of providing moisture meters (3 units for each township in Mandalay and Sagaing Regions),1 unit for each township from other State and Region will more benefic for farmers.
