1.3 Exploring Cultural Identity

Voice= Add to vocabulary notebook Definition: the way a writer or speaker uses words and tone to express ideas as well as his or her persona or personality. Example: The author uses an informal voice to make his character more likeable.

“What is cultural identity?” (9) BEFORE READING… By looking at the features of “What is Cultural Identity,” how do you expect the text to be written and organized?

DURING READING… What do you notice about the author’s voice? Use evidence from the text (words/lines) to support your answer. Label these words/lines with “V” Formal or informal? Find two golden lines that you feel helps explain the meaning of “cultural identity.” [Bracket or underline your two lines]. Circle any words you do not know. Once finished reading, write a brief summary of your section.
