The War Spreads  Britian and France went to war with Germany in September  Poland was occupied by the Nazis.  By the summer of 1940 they had conquered Holland, Belgium, France, Denmark and Norway

 People in the War  A year before the war began the government handed out 40 million gas masks.  60 million people died in World War 2.About 40 million people were civilians.  Children were evacuated from large towns or cities to the countryside

Rationing This poster encouraged people to save peelings and food waste for the “pig bins”. In 1943 sausages, eggs, cheese, bacon and milk were in short supply. So the markets would have all of them one week, but would have none the next week.

D-Day

D-Day  On June 6, 1944 the Allied Forces of Britain, America, Canada, and France attacked German forces on the coast of Normandy, France. With a huge force of over 150,000 soldiers, the Allies attacked and gained a victory that became the turning point for World War II in Europe. This famous battle is sometimes called D-Day or the Invasion of Normandy. France  After the Battle By the end of D-Day over 150,000 troops had landed in Normandy. They pushed their way inland allowing more troops to land over the next several days. By June 17th over half a million Allied troops had arrived and they began to push the Germans out of France

BBy 1943 the Allies were winning.One reason was that Allied factories were building thousands of tanks, ships and planes. In 1944, a huge allied army crossed from Britian to liberate (free) France. Then allied armies invaded Germany. By May 1945 the war in Europe was over. TThe Pacific war went on until August There were fierce fighting on Pacific Islands and big naval battles at sea. Finally the Allies dropped atomic bombs on two Japanese cities. Japan then exited the war.
