Five Officials Umpire Position - Kickoff ABefore Kick: 1Position: R’s restraining line on sideline opposite linesman. (Press Box Side) 2Count R players. 3Be certain coaches, players, substitutes and other individuals are in proper location. 4Hold arm above head to indicate you are ready. 5If short free kick is anticipated: aPosition on K’s free-kick line. bBe alert for first touching by K. Hold bean bag to mark first touching by K. c If ball is kicked to your side, you have ball. If ball is kicked to the opposite side, you have blocks.

Five Officials Umpire Position - Kickoff BAfter Kick: 1Kick to your side: aSignal clock to start when kick is touched other than first touching by K. bPick up runner and follow along sideline. (Progress to R’s 35 yl) cWhen ball becomes dead, sound whistle and give time-out signal. 2Be alert or first touching by K and mark spot with bean bag. 3Mark spot where kick goes out-of-bounds on your side of field: aBean bag spot if last touched inbounds by R. bDrop penalty marker if untouched inbounds by R. 4Maintain position enabling coverage of your sideline at all times. 5Observe legality of blocks and action away from the ball when you are not covering the runner. 6Kick to opposite side of field: aMove cautiously toward play. bObserve action of other players in vicinity of runner. Five Officials Umpire Position - Running Play BAfter snap: 1Areas of Responsibility: aKey center and guards. If they block aggressively, read run. If they pass block, read pass. bRead point of attack paying particular attention to free-blocking zone restrictions. cWhen play is to wide side: 1Move in that direction observing initial line play and action around runner (especially on short gains or losses in side zones). 2Remain on inside working out to maintain boxed coverage. dWhen hole opens directly in front of you: 1React and adjust according to play, possibly move laterally (quick step) from hole being alert for tight end cutting across. 2Cover action at point of attack and then behind runner. 2Check for illegal use of hands or arms and other fouls near neutral zone.

Five Officials Umpire Position - Scrimmage Kick BAfter snap: 1Step toward neutral zone and be alert for roughing the snapper, then shift to action of offensive guards and backs behind neutral zone. 2Read play. Be alert for run or pass. 3Be alert to assist referee in covering a short or blocked kick and determining if the ball crosses neutral zone. 4Following kick, pivot to view line-judge side of field to observe blocks in side zone and move toward return area observing players away from ball. 5Be alert for fouls in secondary and move downfield slowly. 6When ball goes out-of-bounds, move to help relay ball to inbounds spot. Five Officials Umpire Position Ending-of-Period Procedure Responsibilities reside with Referee and Back Judge. Four Officials: (if field clock is used) AWhen facing clock, be responsible for knowing when time expires. BIf time expires prior to snap: 1Sound whistle to prevent snap, if possible. 2If ball is snapped immediately after time expired, sound whistle loud and long, and give time-out signal.
