There are 39 Community College Districts in Illinois. Lake Land’s District covers 3,961 square miles. 2 nd largest in the state! Distance Decay –describes how things like communication and infrastructure break down relative to distance from a cultural center At what point does distance impact how far a customer, student, patient, or employee is willing to commute?

There are over 5,000 students enrolled at Lake Land as of Fall outside of IL 939 outside of district 4,456 in district

Filtered out “commuters” based on location. Only focused on commuters within 15 mile radius of Lake Land’s District Any student outside this radius is probably indicating an old address or location of a parent

Where are the students in relation to main campus (Mattoon, IL)? Campus students average distance : 21 miles On-Line students average distance: 26 miles Who are the students? Campus students average age: 24 average graduation year: 2005 On-line students average age: 28 average graduation year: 2001 Study limitation: Modeling complex student, patient, customer commuting patterns is very difficult Multi-campus network Different types of service delivery Face to face vs. Telecommuting (online education) Web Students: 579 Campus Students:3,676

 What does is cost to commute to Lake Land College and when does it become cost effective to take online courses  Distance from campus  Gas Price:  Fuel efficiency / Miles Per Gallon (Mpg):

The cost for 3 days a week for one semester Average miles per Student: 21 Average Mpg*: 21 Average Gas Price**: $3.55 / gallon Based on highway miles * based on average mpg of cars on the road today ** based on average 1 year gas prices for the region

The cost for 3 days a week for one semester Average miles per Student: 11 Average Mpg*: 21 Average Gas Price**: $3.55 / gallon Based on highway miles * based on average mpg of cars on the road today ** based on average 1 year gas prices for the region

Tuition at 12 credit hours Around $1,200 Any student commuting outside the area in red is spending more money on commuting than on semester tuition Based on 21mpg Gas Prices at $3.55 a gallon < $300 : 44% of Students $301 - $599 : 42% of Students $600 - $1,200 : 14% of Students If every student went to the Mattoon Campus………

Tuition at 12 credit hours Around $1,200 Break point of commuting cost exceeding tuition < $300 : 26% of Students $301 - $599 : 32% of Students $600 - $1,200 : 42% of Students Based on 15mpg Gas Prices at $3.90 a gallon If every student went to the Mattoon Campus………

Tuition at 12 credit hours Around $1,200 Break point of commuting cost exceeding tuition Based on 15mpg Gas Prices at $5.00 a gallon If every student went to the Mattoon Campus……… Housing a Semester Around $2,200 Break point at which moving on campus is more cost effective than commuting

America’s commuting strategy is not sustainable for our workers, students, customers, and patients. Unstable gas prices International instability Rural geography Education Unequal access and adoption Location matters Commuting cost is often a hidden variable.

Savings $666,762 on gas Time Widens the net for potential students Geographically Demographically Environmental Impacts Less greenhouse gases Curriculum access (24-7 Learning) Applies to any employer looking add dollars to employees’ baseline salary Cost Curriculum quality Not all programs translate well to online Broadband Plan ($30/student) 5000 students = $150,000
