CHAPTER FIVE: A WORLD GAZETTEER “A LOOK AT THE SEVEN CONTINENTS”

Chapter Objectives, TEKS, & Essential Question Understand the concept of region, by identifying physical and geopolitical area of significance using related geographic terminology. TEKS: Geography – 9, 9 (A), 9 (B) Social Studies Skills – 21 (B), 22 (C) Essential Question: What physical features would you find on a tour of the world’s continents?

Important Ideas Earth has five oceans – Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, Arctic, and Southern. There are seven continents on Earth – Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America, and South America. Each has it’s own physical features including mountains, deserts, plains, valleys, forests, and bodies of water. Latitude , landforms, and nearness to bodies of water greatly affect climate. Landforms, soil, and climate greatly affect the plants and animals that can be found in each place.
