Things that come from the rainforest: A riddle book We use many things that are grown in rainforests. Get ready to listen to clues and guess what they are! 3

What is brown, usually an ingredient in sweet things, and found in a pod like this?

Chocolate! Farmers in the rain forest grow cocoa plants. The plants grow huge seed pods, and the beans inside are crushed to make chocolate.

What is yellow, long, and grows on a tree like this?

Bananas! Can you think of an animal that loves to eat bananas? This creature will be an important character in the next Magic Tree House book!

What grows at the top of a tall tree, and has a hard shell with something sweet and edible inside?

Brazil nuts! Guess which rainforest animal loves to eat brazil nuts? Here’s a hint…its body is covered with colorful feathers. Brazil nuts are harvested by people who live in rainforests, and transported around the world for other people to eat. This man is carrying a basket of brazil nuts that he gathered.

Macaws love nuts! How is this Macaw cracking the tough shell of the brazil nut? Turn and tell a friend…

What is something that you use when you are sick to help you feel better?

Medicine! People have been using plants from the rainforests for medicine for thousands of years, and scientists are continuing to discover ways to make new medicines from rainforest plants.

What is hard, very tall, and used to make furniture and toys?

Trees! Trees are cut down and the wood is transported to places where it can be cut into different shapes and sizes. How are these logs being moved?

People are working together to find ways to have wood from trees without taking too many. Turn and tell a friend what you think… Why could it be a problem for animals if people cut down too many trees?

Can you think of something that you ate or used today that may have come from a rainforest? Turn and tell a friend about it…
